Anyone out there know what would be the best transmission fluid to use in a 57 GM DUAL RANGE HYDRO. just had it rebuilt and need to know capacity and recommended fluid. The engine/trans came out of a 57 Chevrolet pickup/283 and the transmission came with it. Trans was rebuilt as stock....no mods. Thanx for any info. Jerry

I'm not trying to be a wise guy but what does the rebuilder say?

That transmission would have used "Type A" fluid which is no longer available and replaced by Dexron. Unless you've received other instructions from your rebuilder, do not use synthetic fluid as it is not backward compatible. The newest fluid that is backwards compatible to the old Type A is Dexron III which is still available usually in a "Dexron III/Mercon" package. Castrol "Transmax Dex/Merc" immediately comes to mind but only because I just bought some. Wal-Mart usually has Valvoline "Dex/Merc" for a reasonable price. Many parts stores have a house brand, I've even seen it in Dollar General. The important thing to remember is nothing newer than Dexron III.

My local parts store has type A on the shelf in a store brand label.
