transmission guys: help with th350

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 36-3window, Oct 13, 2007.

  1. i have a th350 that was rebuilt about 7-8 years ago , but used for the first time yesterday. it goes into first and reverse fine but will absolutely not shift into second ..i was over 45 in low

yes , the modulator is hooked up. it's a new adjustable one. does the adjustment really make that big of difference? could it be a stuck governor? or something in the valve body? i'd like to know if this can be fixed underneath the car or do i heed to pull it ... and the ****** guy i go to is gone until monday

    thanks for your help

is you kick down cable adjusted correctly too? it is a part of the shift points also. yes the adjustment on the mod can screw things up for shift points too. It all works in harmony once set up correctly..and you can tweek it a bit buy adjusting slightly with the mod. or the kick down cable in very slight adjustments once you get it close to where you like it.

  3. thanks..yes , the kick down is adjusted properly too

it just will not shift or even try to shift into second

Sure sounds like a valve is stuck in the valve body. Last time I had a problem like this that was the problem. I'm not a trans tech but the good news is that it was fixable installed in the car.

ok mine did this when i had the wrong vacuum port hooked up to the mod. line..it was searching for the govenor to shift it. and with a modified and built th350 the gov, was adj. higer than stock. so the darn thing would not shift into second unless i was screaming the 327 near red line.. than if it shifted it would blow the seat out from under your ****. check to see if you are ported or manifold on your trans mod. valve

if that failes to straighten out your problem, i would err towards what 50 flathead is saying..may be a piece of **** in your ****** keeping a valve from moving.

  7. That's what I would look at, pull the valve body and disaasemble and re-install the shuttle valves one at a time.

Now the downer news, if it was rebuilt, I don't care how long it set up, why would something stick? They didn't use any lube on it? I don't get it. The only thing a th350 normally does when it sits a long time is leak at the ac***ulator on the side of the case, and that stops after it's driven.

  8. When not getting a va***n signal to the modulator, you can force a shift manually, but it takes rpm's and it skips to 3rd.

So should the vacuum source be manifold or ported?

  10. yes , the line is on the intake for full vacuum. i may try playing with the adjustable modulator..or put a normal non-adjustable one in. i see in a parts book that they are available with different vacuum levels...anyone know what to use?

so no one thinks it's the governor? that's good....it would be tight getting that out

Unclee....as for sticking in the valve body , i don't really know what was done to it. i had a similar problem several years ago with another th350 (rebuilt by a different guy)..it would not shift from second to third. after about 10 miles of driving it went into third and has worked fine since. that ****** guy told me some ***embly grease on something must have been the problem

i have only driven this car about 1-1/2 miles , from my shop to my house

sorry for all the questions..i'm just not a ****** guy and always have had someone else do them

Vacuum source is manifold. You can see if the governor is "free" by just popping the cover off and pulling it out. Careful not to drop........ its SLICK. My guess would be valve body though or........one of those balls in the wrong spot or left out maybe? Been a while since I've been inside one. If the valve body is good and all the p***ages are clear, you can shift the thing without modulator or cable hooked up by playing with the throttle and shifter.

  12. thank you all for your help. sounds like it is fixable while still in the car...i can drop the pan and also get to the modulator and governor if needed

i'm was concerned if the ****** had to come out...it's in a `36 ford and it wouldn't come out from below , it's tight in there with a stock X-member. i'd have to pull the motor/****** and some front sheetmetal..

modulator adjustment will not make it behave like that if it is getting vacuum, you have a stuck governor or valve body valve.

although it's possible a dirt dauber made a home in the modulator ******?

to save myself and my sanity when i put the chevy combo in my brothers 40 sedan,, i used a removable trans mount, x member great piece of mind that i did that, had some trans issue the next year:rolleyes: , instead of taking all the rest of the car apart to get the ****** out, had the dual master cylinder bracket stuff put in also so i put the tran mount in too
alot of companies make them, i used a unit from the rodfathers i think been many years

my Dad had this happen to a T350 and the govenor was froze up....trans would not shift .....put in another govenor and problem fixed......I'd pull that first before pulling the valve body, not saying thats what it is but process of elimination can save time and work sometimes..
