I have a ford transmission, 4 speed manual, 4th seems more like an overdrive, not sure what it is out of. I found the following markings, hard to read but I got RF-E5-TR-7006 B36B1 15 C-E4-TR-7A040-AA. Its mated to a 1960' 401ci buick nailhead. It shifts fine when everything is cold but after a few miles and everything gets up to operating temp it shifts extremely hard going into 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th no problem. When I try to put it into reverse I get bad grinding but it will eventually go into reverse. Its has fresh transmission fluid. Any ideas whats causing the hard shifting? Thanks, Sean
does sound like a clutch problem. The transmission is probably a RUG overdrive unit from a mid 80s ford pickup. They came with a metal tag on top to identify it, looks like someone removed the tag.
6bt, please see the attached picture. When not pressing the clutch the shaft going into the clutch housing is loose and not under any tension. Is that what you were asking? squirrel that tag might be there, I have never had the trans out. Car was built when I got it.
Yes it has enough throw/play to disengage. The linkage that sticks out the bellhouse and connects to the slave cylinder has 1/4" of play before the clutch starts engaging. That linking also has play up and down, about 1/4"
'How far does the pedal move to get that 1/4 inch of slack at the fork? You should have about an inch of free travel at the pedal.
measured from the face of the clutch pedal it travels 2 inches before the slack comes out of the fork. How do I adjust it?
Yes. I just adjusted it and went on a drive. WOW I cannot believe I have been driving it like that since I got it (750 miles) It is 1000% better, shifts as smooth as butter. On to the leaking oil pan!
I like my overdrive toploader, most guys don't want them. You can beat on the first 3 gears, don't bang on the OD!
