1947 Mercury station wagon ( all standard ) I had a bad noise at constant speed when travelling , worse the faster you go . Stripped the gearbox and found a bad rear bearing on the mainshaft . Rebuit the box and clutch . All back together and the noise is still there . Not quite as bad and the box is much quieter and smoother . Any help or info greatly appreciated .

Could it be an axle bearing or diff bearing ??
A quick check for axle bearing noise.. If your driving and the noise is obvious, slowly pull on the hand/emergency brake, see if that alters the noise (the brakes pressing on the drum takes some load off the axle bearings, and the noise will change..

  3. Did you rebuilt the tranny or only the one bad bearing ?

did the bearings press into the shafts and housings correctly ?

Ive had worn shafts or transmission housings where the bearing would not press in tight and allowed the bearing to spin or move slightly causing noise .

Or it could be a diff , axle , driveshaft issue .
