I was driving our '39 coupe yesterday when I suddenly developed a noise. It was a clicking noise, which was not there while stopped, but increased in rep rate with increasing speed. (I also felt it with the shifter.) In addition, this noise only appeared in first and second gear; it was not present in third. Any ideas?

It is a '39 Ford, with a '39 drive train (stick, 3 on the floor).

If it is the cluster, then it should be the front gear teeth that are engaged to the input gear. Power goes through that front cluster gear in all gears except high gear. In high gear, the input shaft and mainshaft are locked together, so then there is no strain on that front gear, and no strain, makes the noise stop.

Try reverse, it should also make the clicking noise, if that is what is wrong.
