Transmission question to fit behind a Flathead 226 Ford

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by patchen1, Jan 24, 2011.

  1. I have a 1948 Ford F-3 with a 226 flathead ford in it and I was wondering what there was out there for a decent older transmission that would bolt right up to the Flat 6. Something that might let me go a bit faster than 50, maybe something with an overdrive. Is it possible to put a different set of gears in the stock transmission case so one would have overdrive?

If you're limiting your thinking to Transmissions, O.D. is the ONLY thing that will allow higher hiway speeds. All transmissions other than those specifically designed with overdrive top gears or auxilliary planetary sets (read Borg Warner R-10 or R-11) have 1 :1 ratios on top. Your real problem lies in the rear axle gear. It's probably in the neighborhood of 4.4 : 1. Since the truck has an open drive shaft, you should be able to fit some late model 3/4 ton (or 1 ton) rear axle into it fairly easily. Check out later Ford F-250s-especially those equipped with automatic transmissions. They are more likely to have 3.7 gears.

  3. I'm wanting to get overdrive in the truck and leave the rest the same and the rear axle gear IS 4.86 not 4.4
