55-66ish Chevy non-synchro 3 speed. Probably from 1961 from the casting date you posted before

I'm not sure how you'd get 4 speeds out of that trans, either.

  8. What he said. It's not a 4 speed and will most likely blow up the first time you get on it if you have any kind of horsepower.

Yeah, the date code looks like a 1961, but the tailshaft housing is from a 55 - 57 Chevy. There isn't any tailshaft motor mount. It was probably pieced together from a couple of different transmissions.

can any body recommend a transmission then, or modify the one he's got? my buddys building a 392 blown Hemi with around 400hp its a 40' dodge pick up. the rear end is housing 3:73 gears or so (maybe a little less ratio) he wants it to handle the power and be able to cruise on the freeways with ease...so Im guessing this non-synchro 3 speed aint up to speed!

or it's from a truck, they used a bellhousing mount thru 1972

As for transmission recommendations....what does he have for a bellhousing/adapter?

Looking at the photo, that looks like a non syncro 3 speed, via '55-'56-'57 chevy because of the long tail. '58 and later were short tails and might have had a tranny mount, I think the motors went to side mounts by 58 also. Just testing my memory.......

Shift it easy and don't get on it; it should last a long time.

Yes, Keisler Engineering has adapters to connect the 392 Hemi to late model transmissions. They sell a TKO 5-speed that would handle the power no problem, and they might be able to set you up with their T45RS 5-speed tranny that is good up to 425 lb.-ft. and has overdrive but costs less. But if you want to go with a 4-speed they can sell you the adapter and bellhousing.

    http://www.keislerauto.com/ or 865-609-8187.

If you don't have a ton of $$ for new stuff like a Keisler rig look for a 833 Mopar 4 spd and bell and get the spacer adopter for the 392 to Mopar bell.

had one of those in a 60's c10 6 cyl, Broke it more times than I can remember. Could remove it "rebuild" it and put it back in just under 3 hrs. Had to drive it home in reverse several times. fun times
