Hey Fellas, I have a question about transmissions. Well specifically my three speed transmission. Do these transmissions mount to any other later engines? or are they specific to the yblock? My brother has a 351w in his 59 F100. We were wondering if this trans would bolt to that engine? I have a feeling we are waaaaay off though. He knows someone who has either a 3speed or 4 speed trans thats in a 60 F100, but I dont think its hooked up to an engine. As always, your help and input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rocky
Rocky, I have a 351W in mine, and I'm pretty sure that SBF will only mate up with the c6 or c4 transmission.
Rocky, With the correct bellhousing the 3 speed may bolt to a later engine but it may not hold up if its the light duty 3 speed. If its the heavy duty T-85 it will hold up just fine. Some of the input shafts differ from cars to trucks, sometimes you have to lenghten them sometimes you have to shorten them, not a big deal. You may get lucky and its the correct lenght for the bellhousing that you are using. Transmissions are only specific to there original engine if you are a restorer but not in the hotrod world.
I have 3 of those trans sitting in my shed and they aren't worth much but to stick behind a Y block or 6 cyl . For the engine you are using a AOD , C6 w/small bell housing , C4 , or a 3 or 4 speed trans from about 64 and on will work . You will have to measure the length of the input shaft , the bolt pattern and don't forget the bearing in the crank that has to fit the trans to work . It's just too much work and money to make that T85 to work on a SBF . You can buy an old SB Mustang 3 speed trans for $50 all day long . A C4 will be great and easy to find . The C6 is a gas guzzler trans by far ! The AOD is great but you need the TV cable to make it shift if not Locar sells them . Personally a C4 will do all you want and they are easy to rebuild and a very common trans to find at a good price . Jim
