Will the transmission in a small block V8 "3 on the tree" Galaxie swap out with a Falcon six cylinder three speed on the tree?

What year Falcon? The early ones had a very small transmission that had a different bolt pattern other than the standard "Ford" pattern.

The trans is coming out of a 1960 Sunliner (V8, but don't know size other than it is not a FE based engine) and into a 1961 144 inch Falcon ranchero.

  5. 1960 Ford Sunliner engine options were the 223" Six, 292 which is a Y Block, and 352 which was an FE.
There were no Small Block Galaxies/Sunliners in 1960

And the tranny's from those motors will NOT bolt to a 144 Falcon motor and vice versa

Can we please quit applying the Chebbie small / big block labels to Fords??? Ford made OHV V8s that came in many varieties and sizes. Y-Blocks, Lincoln Y's, MEL's, FE's, Lima's, Windsor's, Cleveland's, and Super Duty's.

The Small Block or Big Block designation is mute since Lincoln Y had the tallest deck height (10.940") of any American production V8 (except the humongous Ford Super Duty's), but only displaced a max of 368 ci.

The short answer is no. Can it be done? Possibly.

The transmission to bellhousing pattern on the V8 is not the same as the Falcon 6.

The early Econoline bellhousing had the conventional-of-the-era (1949-1964) V8 car pattern on the transmission side, and the Falcon 6 pattern on the front. They are still out there. I have that bell on my daily-driver, with a Ford to GM adapter, and a T5.

In 1965 the transmission to bellhousing pattern changed to a wider one.

If you swap bells, and make sure that the clutch splines match the input shaft, and barring any other issues, you might be able to do it.

The only other things I can think of are how to work out the rear mount, and if it will fit or not. The original transmission is tiny, and the tunnel small.

This is the 2.66" 3-speed that came out of my '60 Falcon.

Guess you need to call all the Authors/Publishers of books with Titles like "How to rebuild your Small Block Ford" and How to Big Block Ford, ect.

He's partially right. The 289/302 is the modern SBF(not to mention big bro 351W). But you also have the Y Block, MEL, FE, & then you have the Cleveland style head engines the 351C,351M, 400, 429 & 460s(3 block sizes). Not as easy to sort as the Chevys.
