I have a 55 customline with a ford-o-matic auto trans needeing a rebuild and a 272 engine. I've come across a ford-o-matic from a 64 t-bird with a 390 engine and was curious if this will bolt up to my car. Any help is appreciated.

No it won't,the FE block has a larger bell housing bolt pattern and the T-Bird is probably a Cruise-o-matic you could just swap in the T-Bird's engine and transmission though.

What year/transmissions are interchangeable for my 55 ford-o-matic as a direct bolt in or minor modifications?

You might send Ole Don a pm,it seems there was a thread about using the Ford FMX as an upgrade on fordbarn.com that can be done with OEM parts.

The 390 engine and trans combination will fit pretty good using the stock 272 engine mounts, I believe you have to swap the engine mounts from side to side. I'm sure someone here can elaborate.

Something to consider, if the T-bird transmission is a cruise-o-matic, then you might be able to keep your old bell housing and engine and just swap the body of the t-bird transmission into your car. Be sure to measure and test fit your current bell housing. You might also end up needing to swap the tail shaft on the transmission if one transmission is significantly longer than the other. (That is ***uming that the tail shafts are also interchangable.) Once again, you will need to measure overall lengths of the transmissions and see how much you are changing between the two. And also verify that your drive shaft has the same number of splines as the tailshaft by doing a test insertion.

Just build the Fordo. Same basic unit as the Cruiso, and a build is cheap on those.
Just manually select lo for that first gear start, and it's all good

How hard is it to do a rebuild on a fordomatic? I've never done anything with a ****** but I would be willing to give it a shot.
