Is there an adaptor available to use a TKO behind an early 427 FE bell housing with the narrow '49-'64 tranny pattern?
Tremec TKO's can have Ford Toploader or Saginaw/Muncie four speed patterns on them. Some have both. Input shaft styles are different sometimes also. Would need to know what model TKO you have to recommend an adapter and clutch.
I think this will do ya: Modern Driveline, MD-514-8607...about 1/2 way down the page: http://www.safepay.net/cgi-bin/shop...xt&category=Adapters&merchant=moderndriveline Quick Time also makes an entire bellhousing kit to do exactly that...FE to TKO. RM-6056. Sometimes a pretty good deal, if you're doing a swap where everything has to be worked out from scratch. http://www.quicktimeinc.com/products.html#ford
Quick Time is what is on my 390FE/TKO600 set up. Got it at Hot Rod Chassis and Cycle in Addison Illinois.
One of the problems with top loaders is there were two bolt patterns. The '49-'64 narrow T-10 style pattern was used on the first 4-speed top loaders introduced in '64 ( and the 3-speed T-Ls in '63), then went to the wide (dual) pattern in '65. I built the chassis for my coupe over 20 years ago, using a '64 427 bell housing and Big in/sm.out tranny. I am now trying to finish the car, and want to use a TKO 5 speed without having to start over with a different bell, clutch linkage, pedal location, etc, if possible. I have not purchased the TKO yet, as I know they have at least 3 input length choices, so getting the adaptor, if available, is first. It looks like Modern Driveline might have what I'm looking for and I will make contact soon. Thanks Homespun91, Elpolacko, SPDJNKY, for the info.
Can't imagine the FE is in any way more rough on a trans than my twin turbo BBC. It's put up with quite a bit but I finally after 5+ years of abuse wounded it. Still works, just noisy.
Im very interested in these working as well. Im putting a 455 inch FE in my 64 Fairlane Gasser. But I also want to drive the car on 50 - 100 mile blasts. I have a toploader but the driveability will be lacking. This will really elp me out to have an extra gear to go to for the freeway. Not to mention to be able to use a lower gear and not compromise will be a better tire fryer driver pleaser. Im thinking 4.11 depending on the TKO gear ratios. Total Perf-
That's what sold me on the TKO. The extra gear and still run at the strip. I could only imagine the fuel mileage and RPM out of my BB FE with 430 gears and a locker spinning 31" cheater down the freeway
