I plan on using a TKO unit in my '36 Ford. Right now I am in the process of getting the ch***is squared away with regards to engine/trans mounts and the rear 4 bar and pinion angle. I'm not ready to buy the trans yet so my question is, how similar is the TKO to a standard T-5 unit externally? I figure if I can score a junk T-5, I can use it for mock up in the car till I buy the TKO. Are the mounting points the same? Length? Shifter location?

The TKO is somewhat more "manly", both in external size, and in the guts of the beast. Don't take this wrong...it's not a huge trans, by any means. It'll go in your '36 very nicely. I have a TKO in my '40 using the rear mount for a Turbo 350 that Ch***is Engineering sells. Do a little searching on the WWW, as I've seen drawings with ALL the TKO dimensions you'll ever need. Plan on using the MID shifter location. It ends-up just rearward of Henry's original shifter location. DD

...another question on this. Is a t5/tko the same (gm and ford), except for the engine side of the bellhousing?

The shifter location (Moveable on TKO), shifter base (T5), and spline counts are different.

That being said, as far as mocking up a T5 for a car using the TKO later, it is pretty close, but the transmission rear mount will have to be couple inches rearward of the T5 location. At least this is what I have run into putting them in Mustangs in the past that originally had T5's.

T5 and TKO are two, totally different x-missions. Ford and Chevy varieties of each come with different input lengths, gearing and OD ratios. For T5 stuff, do a search for Flat Ernie's all-encomp***ing thread here on the HAMB...more than you ever thought possible as far as differences in a "basic" transmission, not to mention you'll be reading for hours and hours, and then some. TKO 500 / 600 info IS on the WEB if ya spend some time looking. DD

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like I need to find an unrepairable TKO for mock up or just wait until I've got the funds together for the one I'm going to run in the car.

There is a good right up on adapting a TKO to a flathead in this months Rod and Custom. The article also explains the differences between the T5 and TKO.

    Good Luck.
