Trepanier deuce vs. Shine deuce

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hillbillydeluxe, Sep 3, 2004.

  1. Seems to be the week of comparo topics with the Cole Foster '36 vs. the 50fraud car. After seeing the Shine '32 in Hot Rod, and THEN seeing the Trepanier '32, I was wondering what anyone else thought.

Yes, these are overblown, way-too-much-money cars, but damn, each one is exceptionally detailled and impressive.

From a traditionalist perspective, I love the purity of the Shinemobile, but I fall in love with the details on Troy's car. Love the riveted look of the engine mounts, but the back end could be sprung just..a..bit..higher.

    Anyone else?

    Who cares.....

But I love Trepanier's.....Nothing wrong with Shines, but I don't like red and black, and I'm not in love with the wheels.

T's is just about perfect in anyway. I love the color, I love how low it is, all the proportions are right on.

    I like Rudy's too....

  3. I'm with you. Here's some pics for those not familiar with either car.... Troy's...

  4. And the Shine '32. Wish I could have found a pic of the engine. Lawd, what a flatty this thing's wearing.

both are works of art done in slightly different fashion. If I was rich, I would want both in my garage.

  6. Are we gonna hafta send in pictures of our wangs again?

  7. yeah, I prefer both! They are so clean though, I'd be afraid to drive em. Maybe with a big dent in the door. [IMG]

Other than the engine, I would like to know what the "Shine" car had that wasn't off the shelf from So-Cal Speed Shop.

I like them both, but I give the edge to Troy's.

  12. I've seen 'em both in person... and Troy's wins hands down...

It's a mind blower with damn near every part on the car hand fabbed... For instance... the rear wheels... first appear to be turned out of Billet aluminum '40 Ford copies but in 19" and appear to have a beauty ring attached. Well, the beauty ring is milled into the billet aluminum wheel... uh huh.

The engine is a work of art... The front axle is custom milled... the wish bones are custom milled and have a cove milled into them, as well as the front axle.

I wonder how many man hours they have in it... I hear they are taking it to the GNRS... I hope they win. It'll be the first time in years that something half-*** interesting participates.

    Sam.

Troy's does it for me. As someone already said,Shines looks like a biiboard for So-Cal. That's OK but I am getting a little tired of all of the So-Cal look alikes.

Jimmy's SoCal car is *****in. I'd love to have it.

However Troy's car has done what I thought impossible... taken a traditionally styled car to the next level. Keep an eye on this car because it is "history" in the making so to speak. Street Rod Builder did an article on all the fab work. I couldn't believe it! It's the kind of car that you want to just lie down on a creeper and study everything top to bottom. If I ever get that chance, I will probably be hard for a week!

Only thing that bugs me about T.T.'s car, and a big reason it sits so low, is the kick in the frame at the cowl. Seems abrupt to me, but that car is definately Superbad***!

  21. Wow, when I 1st saw this thread I said oh hands down Jimmy is going to build something way cooler that billit Troy. Boy was I wrong, Troys car is awesome. I had never seen that, its truly a work of art. I never seen anything from him that I like, but this is great. Yeah, I would have to say Troys... The wheels alone make a difference to me, but there is so much more..

It is amazing what alot of money can buy you. I like both of them. The first thing I would do to them is take them to some old dirt road, or better yet to Bonneville and spin a bunch of dougnuts in them are really dirty them up. It ain't HotRodding unless you drive them. Anyone with alot of money can buy a trailer quenn. Anyways what year are they? I think they are 2004 that look like 32's. They are sweet though but nothing to drool about. I look at them and say man that guys must be loaded with money. I quess I would feel a little better a about the sitaution but it seems when you go to a show or cruise in a old rat rod and you pull up next to a top dollar car like these they seem to role up there nose as if they sweated night after night to build it. No some rod shop built it for them. I aint sure about these cars but some old guy did not build either one of these with your basic back yard hot rodding tools. To me it is just an old style billet ride from 2004 trying to look like it is from the fifties. Anyone can pic up a Socal catalog and order away. Plus anyway I like the way mine smokes and leaks oil.

I'm sorry we can only talk about non-intellectually stimulating topics on the HAMB now.

You will have to delete this post.

I for one think both cars are stunning and am afraid to say more than that. It would be far too much of a stretch for my feeble mind to A) come up with an opinion beyond that and B) be able to articulate it in the writen word.

    OHHHHH FUUUUCK IIITTT!

I like the Trepanier because high-boy 32 Roadsters have been done to death and anything that pushes the envelope while still maintaining the soul of a traditional Hot Rod is interesting.

The Shine car is actually pretty boring to me. In a wretched excess kind of way. "Let's bolt everything "HOT ROD!!!!" on an otherwise common, repop car" seems to be the theme of that car.

I'm at work right now. I'm over an hour away from my Garage. I'll have to stay on the HAMB.

Troy's, for sure. He's long been the king of detail on mid-century cars, but this shows a subtlety and an awareness of traditional hot rod stuff that I didn't know was in him.

I love the low stance and tall wheels.

Wow, I gotta go with the crowd on this one. I love Shine's car, but I love Troy's more. Everything is just right. The stance, the track, the colors.. every detail is very pleasant and clean. I love it.

It's nice to see two show cars that don't have mica metallic purple pearl layed all over em too...

  26. I got the Rides first season box set for my B-day Wednesday (Gotta love a girl who pays attention) and I just watched the episode just a few minutes ago on the 67 Mustang that Trepanier built for Ebay.

I also read the articles about the Shine roadster and the Trepanier roadster.

I think if you are worried about what others think of you on the HAMB, you'll pick Shine's even if a lot of the stuff on it are 1-800-SoCal. But I like the innovation that Trepanier uses on his, there are a few details that miss the mark because we are so used to seeing them another way, but the package as a whole is a lot more fun to look at because of it. Also the color choice focuses your attention on the car, not the shiny parts.

My vote and ***** point to Troy (that didn't sound too gay did it?)

  27. The writeup in Street Rod builder is right next to me-got it last night at the grocer's when I kept doing laps to the magazine rack (do I need it, can I come back and, ah, hellwiddit). Troy's has a lot more depth to it than what these shots show. Man, I draw cars for a living, and this car has every-single-line nailed! I keep looking at the buildup pics, and it's in GM-showcar territory. Astounding. It just needs a little bit more spring in the back end to make 'er look right. The wheel cove looks a little low for those big-**** wheels.

    DAMMit that's-a-one-nice-car!

I gotta say, that I think putting the rear any higher would have made the car miss its mark.

It's supposed to be a trend-setter and be something new, while at the same time have a very traditional feel to it. He hit it perfectly with the ultra-low look while still having traditional-"ish" 19" wheels on it with narrow tires.

I have pics of both cars on my site

To see Troys check out Columbus pics (and a few on West Coast Nationals 04 (but the best are problem in the mag on the build up coverage0

Shines, I have some pics on my GNRS coveage

Troys is a more one off ride and would gather more points. So Cal wants to claim a traditional car would never win, well Troys I think could.. it would score alot of points. As Sam said, the wheels alone are masterpieces. I overheard someone at Columbus say they cost around $3500 to build... I do not think there is any chrome on the car, is all nickel plate.. pure *****in top and bottom..

I prefer the TT car, except the color.
    It's too, "incon****uous" for a hotrod.
    Beige is for SUV's.
I would have preferred it in a cl***y "Blue Blazer" look, (Midnight or brilliant blue body, with the same tan seats) but other than that it's just plain cl***y.
    So cl***y it almost looks like a restoration, except it's a highboy...ghnawhatimean?
    It's still marginally my favorite.

Shine's car says "HOTROD!!!! but those shiny bumps in the hood I'd like painted or aimed straight in reference to the body instead of drooping down at the rear of the teardrop. For me they just look bent.
The front wheels look like hubcaps.
Red seats with black paint is 100% HOTROD!!! even if it is cliché

Over all both cars are ...
    AMAZING work
    they ROCK!!
    ****ing amazing
Those roadsters rock.. the quality is exceptional.
I'd love to have either one, but I'd change the wheels and hood sides on the So Cal car.

    Request!!!

Anyone remember the '60 Chevy Troy did when he was just becoming known, like maybe a decade ago and remember what magazine featured it? month year etc? I MUST look at it again...Thanks
