I already have the body 1' off my frame . The trunk is cut out for repairs and I have a 4 x 4 sitting over concrete blocks across the bottom of the trunklid hinge mounts and the front is blocked up of the firewall mount to the frame mount. Eventually i'll have to put the trunk back together and need to get that setup out of there. Can I lift and support the rear from the trunklid hinges themselves? I was thinking of getting some chain links that bolt together thru the holes of the hinges and hook up a chain or straps from there. The rear gl*** is still in and I havn't had any problems with how I have it now, but I need to get the body totally loose from the frame to get it out from underneath. The front I figured to go thru the firewall frame mount or make a bracket that will bolt up to the hood hinge holes. My inner rockers are shot so I really don't have a good way otherwise that I know of to lift and support the body. Thanks in advance, Bill
I would suggest taking the doors off if you havent already and bracing the jambs with some barstock or angle to keep the geometry stable before really doing any serious movement. You're best bet really is to just get about 6 friends and a case of beer to move this thing. With weak rockers, doors off, and no trunk floor if you do any hoisting from the corners that isn't properly balanced and braced you could have a serious problem. However, here are a couple of suggestions. You have a couple of choices for the front. A long 2x4 slid across the outside of the firewall frame mounts as mentioned...or even better putting bolts on top of the cowl on each side where the top of the fenders bolt to. A couple of grade 8 bolts in each side ..with a chain and the front is done. I used these points when taking my 57 off. I am ***uming that the whole front clip is off..inner and outer fenders..hood..radiator..etc. You're going to have to get creative for the rear since there is no floor currently. Might have to weld a temporary piece of barstock running side to side along the top of the quarters with a loop in the middle. The trunk hinges probably would take the weight but I'd be worried about tweaking them slightly leading to a trunk lid fitment nightmare. Best of luck
Here's what I ended up doing, doubled up the 2 x 6 on top, 4x4 post on the other end. I tacked in 2 x 6 x 1/4" tubing and had a leftover leaf sping clamp for the middle.
