The car was in Hot Rod and on Gasser Madness.. the car was destroyed to comply with 'enviromental laws' ( unlicensed vehicles).

TINGLER- Nuthin' wrong with raising the rear of your Fairlane! Put the rear end under the springs. You'll pick up 5 in. or so. Then you will have clearance for bigger meats too !! Great thread.....keep the pics & info coming.....

I gotta ask... what was the real purpose of jacking a car to the moon like that? I mean I can understand that the "nose-up" straight axle gasser stance was intended to provide better weight transfer, but why did the late-60s / 70s guys put the whole car 3 ft in the air?

Novadude, I have a car (62 Vette) scheduled to go up a bit and to me its all about the look. It's like a stance that kind of makes a statement. I have another 62 Vette that sits kind of low up front on Cragars 15 x 4s in the front and some biggers on the rears giving it that right stance. It kind of gives it an attitude. I remember the gassers with the nosebleed stance dancin all over the place and for lack of a better word they just look bad. I think hot roddin is about being different and maybe even a bit in your face type of statement. You either love it or you hate it. I wouldn't own a stocker unless it was something really special and there are stock guys out there that cringe at some of the stuff I like. Looking at these cars make me can't wait until mine is out there (probably a year or so). Jim

Maybe to fit the fat meats under the stock (uncut) wheel wells. Pre-tubs.....

You know, I have always thought that some cars are just jacked up, and some actually take the suspension mods seriously. I do see quite a few cars that will lower the rear, radius the fenderwells, and set up the suspension for weight transfer. Then some that just lift and call it a gasser. I am not one to insult somebody else's ride, but I don't care for the ones listed either. They look like they are ready for the mud drags. Sorry, just my opinion..

Yep, fancy looking mud boggers. About the only thing I can remember seeing at the drags as high as those was the Ramchargers old Mopar 3 window cpe which was before they made a name for themselves in SS

Hey Fellas, The straight axle craze has really taken off! We get alot of emails and calls at the shop asking for tips on doing an axle, We have personally done axles on Falcons,Corvettes,Mopars, etc...

But lets start off with some tech tips on doing an axle on a 55-57 chevy and keeping the stock rails,
this setup is the easiest, looks cool and for some stupid reason you might want to change back you still can by not chopping the rails.

Heres a very ruff crash course in straight axle tech.

#1 Call up tinny's hot rod shop in PA, They do zero drop straight axles in chromoly, super strong. (the mas axles Bend under a tri five! yikes, mas will not make any thicker axles.)

#2 get the car on a lift pull the original front end junk out.

#3. Keep the stock steering box.

#4. the springs, perches, hangers from speedway seem to be a good setup,
(the shakles are too short and need to be made longer depending on how high you wanna go, The Springs from speedway need to be re-arched to go higher, these springs workd great.

#5.steering can be done a few different ways, again the best bet is to use the stock box and location. (this is for a small block btw, Big blocks are a whole can-o-worms. Keep the upper drag link and idler arm in place.

#6. you will ne a 3rd steering arm on top of one of the spindles either left or right and an extra link from the upper drag link over to the new 3rd steering arm that you will mount on top of the spindle.

#7 get the front end buttoned up, take it to a GOOD alignment shop who will be willing to work with ya a little bit, somone who has worked on heavy straight axle trucks should have the expertise to "set you straight", hah..
since somtime the axle will need some tweaking to get good camber angles.

    Any other questions, PM us!.
Thanks, and Fellow Hambers have a ridiculous (in a good way) holiday!

I don't know why anyone would have any other questions, with this detailed tech info (I especially like the detailed #2 tip). Good job!

The word "gasser" is one of the most abused words on HAMB, and I'm guilty of it too.

My car (60 Falcon wagon) is not a true gasser, and it's not intended to be. With a solid front axle on parrelel leafs, and fenderwell headers, it resembles the gasser "look" that was popular on street machines in the late 60's and into the 70's sometime.I always loved these type of cars. The more unusual the body style, the better. Perhaps a better term for some of these (like mine) would be "gasser STYLE".

These cars are certainly not for everybody. Some love 'em, some hate 'em, but the guys that built and own them are having fun, and that's really what it's all about !!

    I wish everyone a safe, healthy, & prosperous New Year:D !!!!!!!!!
