One more day on the road and we’re heading home, a few stops left in Oklahoma then high tail to Lebanon MO. for the last leg home. Bad weather predictions for the Midwest and we wanted to get ahead of it.
We made it back to Lebanon Missouri on the evening of Wednesday, May 2 and spend the night again at the ****er Moss. Soon after we left in the morning it started raining and I mean raining. My wipers took a **** in the suite was only about 15° so I was stopping off i soon after we left in the morning it started raining and I mean raining. My wipers took a **** in the sweep was only about 15° so I was stopping often with Rain X. Finally after getting through St. Louis and I have interstate 72 where the traffic wasn’t as heavy and the trucks were not blowing me away I could finally see where I was going. looks like the collet on the wiper motor was slipping. I didn’t want to completely empty my trunk in the storm to get the tools to fix it on the road. We had lunch/dinner in Staunton Illinois and pulled into my driveway around 7 PM.
Here’s my final posting of the day which I’ve been at it now for over eight hours. 23 days, 5046 total miles, what a ride.
Spent a couple weeks here in 1960 because my dad bought a new house and we needed a place to stay until the construction was complete and the house was ready. Lived there through my school years about a block and a half due north of the wig-wams and put a lot of miles on that section of the mother road known locally as Foothill Blvd.
Thank you for the ride along. Next trip turn in at RT66 #71 Arizona there's always a cold something in the Ice box. Terry aka dirt t
Great job David, we saw much of the same but missed some of it. We only made it. To Williams then headed home. We planned on staying at the Blue Swallow and stopped mid morning to make reservations. Our wives saw a employee cleaning a room and went in for a peek. They decided we were staying elsewhere. Too small they said. As far as your axle bearings, I have been in the very same position which led to meeting some really great hot rodders in a small Kansas town. My motto has become “ The difference between adversity and adventure is at***ude”. Nothing like a good long road trip in a good hot rod. Thanks for sharing your trip with us.
Thanks for the ride along. You had me worried with the thread tag. I thought we were in for a ride in a VW Kombi with different coloured pills and everyone saying stuff like "hang cool, Man". That's what I get for watching Kelly's Heroes with Oddball.
Great trip! Thanks for taking us along. We have done parts of that trip, but never the whole shot. Glad you guys had a great time. We were in Dewey Ok. this weekend and had a great time, but had motor problems on the way home in Des Moines but got it home. I will post pix later. Say hi to Larry and Mary for us, haven't seen them since Joliet. Thanks again for the ride!
Trip of a lifetime in my book. Congrats and thanks for sharing. I have been the whole route 66/40 route but off the beaten path to the old downtowns/sites has been limited to California, Arizona and New Mexico. Problem is if you hit every little spot you don't get anywhere, so it takes time, lot's of time. Another problem is as towns grow those old sites get gobbled up into "Urban Progress" but there are still plenty of old sites to see. I'm sure you guy's picked and chose the highlights you had at the top of the list and glad you had the time to do it. Again Great Trip and Great Pic's!
As we travelled we realized how difficult it would be to see and record every building, mural, roadside attraction and remnant of the route. Our guidebook did that and the author made numerous trips to record his “version” as I like to call it. This trip was our “version” and only a fraction of what we saw and experienced along the way, much more of it recorded in our minds and hearts as memories. I often wondered who owns the property that has stood empty for years and why ARE those structures allowed to wither away? Who and why did someone just walk away? I really think part of my experience was posing these and other questions in my mind as we travelled and observed what was once the magic of auto travel across country on RT 66. I’m sure everyone’s experience and thoughts are all a little of the same and perception a little different. JMHO My memories are forever, if anyone should go, ENJOY in your version!
Thanks so much for sharing your road trip. We've been planning a coast to coast trip. We're picking up old route-66 at St Louis. Then returning on the old Lincoln highway. My grandson has it all planned out, and has really enjoyed this thread too. My daughter is expecting a baby in June, so our trip was postponed until next summer. Also loved the photos, and great looking coupes! Ron....
Hate to say it, but you guys missed a long strip of 66 a few miles west of Albuquerque all the way to Gallup! Well, maybe next time.
Thanks very much for taking the time to post your adventure. I've done the road twice myself but its been 20 years! I will do it again someday for sure.
Looks like a fun trip Dave, road trips in the hot rods are the best. Thanks for taking us along on yours.
Excellent post, enjoyed seeing the old sites. My first trip on Rt was 60 years ago last Oct., that was way before I-40. Remember seeing the big black jack rabbits, the yellow Whitting Bros gas stations rough high ways, long hard pulls on steep grades. Was traveling with my dad in a 1937 Ford 1 1/2 ton truck pulling a four wheel trailer. ( still have that truck, just bought a new part for it)Saw every mile of the mother road at 45mph from California to Tulsa. Will never forget that trip. Bones
This is my favorite stretch of old Rt.66 and often missed if you don't know where to catch it. Maybe the reason I like it so much is the Laguna Burger along the way. 1/2 lb fresh never frozen green chili cheese burger that can be scored at Laguna travel center. The second photo is the portion of highway that I suspect was part inspiration for Radiator Springs in the movie Cars Blue Moon Garage, you up for a Laguna Burger? or anyone else for that matter....I'm in Larry
Thanks for taking the time and effort you put in this thread I.RANT. Great pics. The missus and i have done a lot of the 66 but not the whole route. Beautiful country.
Hey I saw you guys! Remember the guy in the orange '62 biscayne in Joplin Missouri? Hah, small world Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
