ok i've been looking for a rear fender for the yamabobber for a few weeks. was about to order one from the place out west abe sent me the link to when i found a guy that has a non ribbed triumph 4.25 wide which i think is a little narrrow for the tire i'm running out back(goodyear 5.0) for $35. he's also got a ribbed triumph 5 inches wide in good shape he wants $75 for. i know when compared to ebay those aren't bad prices, but ebay is the only place i've been able to find originals. the repops look nice and in steel are $100 and in alum are $110. i i'd like to do the ribbed but with the paint layout i'm thinking on the non ribbed may work better. looking at new houses for the last week has me unable to think straight and a bit confused. any advise? oh yeah found the perfect house got really excited only to fin out today it's in a 100 year flood zone and may not be an option. it had a HUGE garage. damn...ken....
I'm not up on the new scooter tire sizes, but the 4" flat fender was pretty common back when everybody was running 5.00x16. I can't imagine giveing 100 for a bike fender, but I'm pretty old.
Your right the 4 inch flat fender was the staple of rear fenders on choppers, The rib fender also about 4 inches wide was commonly used, although the tire says 5 x 16 you have to remember that is the sidewall width not the tread just like car tires the actual width is smaller you should have no problem.
I just used the ring from an old (around 1935) Ford tire cover on my Yamachopper. FatABone sold it to me for cheap (thanks, Junior). It was enough to make my rear fender, front fender, and to cut a piece to mount on the tank, carrying the 'rib' up over that. It looks bad*** and was much cheaper than what you're talking about. If you run a WTB in the cl***ifieds ya might be able to turn one up. Sawzall had a really nice one in the cl***ifieds for $50 last week. Here's a link to Sawzall's cl***ified so you can see what I'm talking about... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54127 ~ Rob
The spare tire rings work real nice on a 16"...and the triumph ribbed work nice on the 18" The tire radius compared to the fender radius can be "off", depending on which way you pair it up, so I make some relief cuts so the fender fits right.
