I googled Mustang rumble seats and that is what I found as well, they were not production rumble seats.

I always thought '39 was the last year for the rumble seats, at least for the Big Three.

  3. I found these older pictures. One is of a Mustang with a rumble seat and a sunroof and the other is of a retractable. Yeah Mustangs are O/T but these are kinda cool.

What about the late 70's Eldorado with it's "Tumbleseat" 76? 75?
I think this was an option in convertibles, remember seeing a price quote in the 'Old Car Price Guide' but I'm still unclear as to what a 'tumble seat' is in regards to mid late 70's Eldorados.

  6. Tumble seat????

Isn't that the passerger seat that you took the front seat bolts out. Then you'd have one of your drunk buddies ride in it and you'd mash the gas from a dead stop and..... "Tumble Seat"! Your buddy ends up in the back on his back.

I tried Google with "eldorado tumble seat" and "cadillac tumble seat" and came up with zilch. May have been something that was on one of the show cars, not a production option.

  8. Nope, didn't happen. AutoKraft did modify some, but they were NOT factory options, and I'm pretty sure they were on 1969 models. the Galpin Ford one was a one off from what I have been told.

nope, never happened. Ford spent a quarter Million dollars developing it, and then killed it after the prototype which was destroyed

The one I had didn't even have a back seat, was used for storage for pot and pan salesmen as they traveled

  10. Hummm...

    You sure 'bout that?

  11. Yes I am, that car has an aftermarket kit that came out later. The designer that worked for Ford Ben Smith, after he retired, made these kits under the name Retractables Unlimited in 1994. I believe only about 20 kits were made, it included a Fiberglass trunk lid and the two piece top (also glass) he went out of business shortly thereafter

  12. Well H.R. I guess for now I can't argue with ya' seeing that I'm a GM/Pontiac person. I just know that I've heard about these things almost my whole life. But then, I remember being told the moon was made out of green cheese too. :D

The retractable hardtop idea was pretty much a dead one. In the 57 Galaxie (or was it Fairlane?) it wasn't too bad, there was a box in the middle of the trunk that would hold a couple medium sized suit cases or about six bags of groceries (remember the paper bags?), and there was a big back seat. In the Mustang there couldn't have been ANY room in the trunk once that top was folded in. Any groceries or luggage would have to go in the back seat. That's okay for an exotic sports car, but not something you want to tool around in all the time. Plus it would have driven the price sky high -- the Galaxie retractable was a top of the line model.

Does it have to be US made? Otherwise Triumph 2000, think the TV show Bergarac. As far as I can tell that was the last factory "rumble seat" or "dicky seat"

Actually, the last rumble seats were in 1939, but only in the 'Roadster' models.
Convertibles had rear seats, roll up door windows, longish tops, and trunks only.

Looks like it is indeed the 1949 Triumph 2000 Roadster! I like the way they did it -- managed to fit the spare tire back there AND a passenger windshield! Handling with a couple people in the back had to be atrocious though.
