Event Coverage TROG Flabob Airport, Riverside April 15-16

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bad Bob, Feb 20, 2023.

  1. How many HAMBers going to the next TROG? There were MANY at the last one. 75 cars entered, at least 30 Bikes. It was such a blast! Almost all of the ACEScc were there. I ran twice. Plan on more runs this time. Looks like they might have different classes this time. Last one was just a test run. There was a Swapmeet, Food Trucks, Car Show, but the pits were closed to non racers. Heard there might be a wristband for people who want to walk around the pits. More info as I get it.... TROG FLABOB.jpg

I was there for the first one as a spectator. Drove my '39 p/u. All in all it was a good event for the first time out of the box. The spectator parking situation for old cars - as been mentioned in previous threads was hap hazard and poorly planned. But I'm guessing that will be addressed for the April meet. That said I'm planning on going in April again as a spectator. But I do know a bunch of the guys and gal I have coffee with on Saturday mornings are planning on going not as spectators but as racers. All in all it should be even better than the first one. JMO

  3. First one was pretty un organized, cause they didn't know how many guys would show up, and didn't want to get too invested, not knowing the turnout. He told me friday, NO registering at the gate this time(me). haha Must pre register, pay online. Don't know if TECH will be different. Last time it was helmut, seatbelt, battery secured, no loose items, ho glass headlights. Pre 1934 vehicles.
Lots of people were pissed cause they couldn't enter the pits. I told him, it should be accesable for an added cost.
FYI- it was $175 last time, to race!

I'm sure there are insurance costs along with other costs only event runners know. Vintage sports car races cost the car owners $800.00 per car.

I attended as a spectator at the first Flabob event. They need to address several concerns before I will attend again. Spectator were unable to go into the pit area, I can attend any drag race in the country and get close to the participants cars. No spectator seating, standing for several hours is not my idea of having a good time. The swap meet was a joke, most spaces were on dirt. The entry fee was excessive and then they came around with a bucket asking for a additional donation for the air field! Spectator parking was disorganized.

  14. Like I mentioned before....There were growing pains at the first event, which is common with any new event. They will be putting on more staff to help out and making some changes. maybe this isn't the event for you....

  15. Got some more news this morning. The airport is very happy with the way the event went last time, so they are making more room at the pit area and letting them put up a Quansit hut! Sounds like this is just getting better.
    Stay tuned....

Something to remember about the FLABOB airport.
It was there long before the housing developments that you see there today.

Granted the airport is now surrounded by a truly residential area, but that shouldn't be an element, that brings a sour face, its just a fact that has to be contended with.

It's pretty cool that the locals that run the airport, are happy with the event and that its going to happen again, it could have easily just have gone the other way.

As stated before, it was the first time and its had its growing pains and various elements of disorganization, and hassles, hopefully that will all be dealt with at the upcoming event.

I wish I could attend, but with the up coming Portland swap-meet, logistically, so close calendar wise, I will just have to enjoy the coverage on the HAMB.

Hope you all have a great time, at a great old airport, watching the cool vintage cars, smokin the tires!
    Thanks from Dennis.

  17. I was told a bunch of the neighbors came to the event, cause it was something different. There was a LOT of people there...

  18. I agree, it could have gone the other way....Like what happened in Fontana, with the guy who complained about the noise but didn't even live in the house.

  19. They just sent out a message that they are starting to go through the entrants now! Choosing who's cool and who NOT cool! hahaha

It's a familiar story around here. Airports. racetracks, etc in existence long before developers purchase land and put up a housing tract. Then the residents complain about the noise, forcing the venue out of business. The residents usually win in these battles. Those are voters, politicians put their interest ahead of the venue's interests; even though the venue was there first. It's happened repeatedly.

I've been contemplating going but being north of the border it's a big commitment for an event that is still in it's infancy. Interesting to hear no access to the pits. That would be a non starter for me right off the hop. Been in drag racing my whole life and as some of the guys have already said, that's one of the keys to the sport is being in the pits. Any new event/organizing group is always going to have to work through the bugs and learning curve. Hopefully some of this feedback makes it their way.

  22. That was at the last event. Supposed to access to the pits this event.

  23. If you guys read the WHOLE thread, you'll see that's there's many changes for this event in April.

Sounds like it’s turning into the next Moon Eyes. Meaning more cars than space can handle if you get where I’m going with this. Not to mention having to drive thru a neighborhood to get to the airport from the main drag.

Wow that's a lot of entries, do you have an idea of how many race last time? I was there and I'm going to say around 50 to 70?

  27. Last event had 75 entries, and about 30 Bikes.
Also, last time there weren't any classes, so you just lined up next to who you wanted to race. This time there's supposed to be classes. I'll look it up...

  29. Just got my approval for TROG!!! By the way.....there's alot more rules at this years event. If you get caught running alcohol, instead of gas, you'll be banned for life! haha Pit's will be open to spectators, for an additional fee. EVERYBODY will need a wrist band. Hmm....trying to remember all the rest. I'll let you know when I get my race packet.
