That's an interesting thought- how much of the brake fluid is pushed back to the master cylinder by the springs in the drums. The 10 lb residual valves keep 10 lb of line pressure from there to the wheel cylinder, but I have no idea how much line pressure the springs in the drum make pushing the wheel cylinder pistons as the brake shoes retract... I guess it boils down to how far those pistons are actually traveling until the line pressure drops to 10 lb.

I have a strong suspicion that not having that pivot bolt thing on my backing plates adjusted properly is the culprit. When I adjust the front brakes, one of the shoes is probably contacting, while the other is not. When it gets warm enough out to start working on it again, and I have it up on jack stands to remove the transmission and fix the leak, I'll do the procedure to adjust those.

All 3 flex lones are high-quality units from Pete & Jakes. PXL_20230506_195052067.jpg

Got to adjusting the anchor pins today and guess what? They aren't in a slot...

Back to the drawing board to get these to be better.

  6. Likely Wilson Welding brakes. How does the wear pattern on the shoes look? They will eventually wear in to full contact. Otherwise if you can find someone with an Ammco shoe grinder set up to do fixed anchor brake shoes, you could get them matched to the drum diameter.

There is a thread on here somewhere where I'm thinking Krylon 32 modified the anchor pins on some Wilson brakes to get the shoes centered because they were not working good for him.

  7. I had a same problem, replaced the 1" bore master cylinder with an 1 1/8" bore. brakes are perfect now.

Thoughts on the idea of smaller wheel cylinders to balance front/rear ?

I think Eli has a shoe grinder.

Now that I've driven the thing around a bit, I think the shoes have somewhat worn in to the drums. And I'm going to pull them off and take a look, but it certainly brakes better than it did when they were new. The pedal goes down a little lower as well which tells me I probably need readjust the star
