Automotive Stethoscope is a better Tool to use , I used to track down a bad valve guild , install a Vac cap at the end ,cut tip off for better results , you can stick between oil pan & flex plate while running if you think it's cracked, another tool bore scope to check for crack with out pulling trans.
A length of heater hose works well to isolate noises and identify where they are coming from, easier to use than a solid dowel or broom stick IMO.
^^^^^ If broken skirt was #1 piston it may have chased the exhaust valve while the valves where floating for some odd reason.
Well I'll just add this to the pile - Loose rockers is the result of broken piston skirt. Or did the rocker break the skirt ? Hummmm
