I put a 4 speed Muncie in my 32 Ford. Started out great the first 200 miles.
Then it would get stuck in 4th. If I tried hard it would come out. Then would work fine until getting stuck again. Then it started grinding going in reverse, but not every time. Now I’m having trouble in all gears but not all the time. Getting stuck and or not going in gears. Before I say all I’ve checked or have done I would like to hear what you think.

  3. Grinding going into reverse means the clutch is not releasing all the way .

you really need to explain what you have done so far,,,to get a decent diagnosis .
If it was good for 200 miles and now going bad,,,,,,maybe something has come loose .
    But,,,,,we can’t really say,,,,,you haven’t told us anything yet .

I’ve checked and re checked everything 4 times. Mad adjustment to the clutch play. Ect. I ran through the gears while not running the motor 10 times a few minutes ago and everything was fine then it jammed up again

  7. It jammed up again,,,,,as in while just sitting with the engine off ?

Maybe? But nothing to judge from. I adjusted the free play and the clutch wouldn’t release and I back it out a few turns. Still jammed up

Yes engine off. I can go under the car and move the linkage and it will shift again before jamming. I can drive it and shift fine then it will hang up in a gear and want come out

  10. Then,,,,,it’s a shifter problem,,,,,or an internal transmission problem .
Pull the transmission,,,,,and check the shifter .

Grinding going into reverse is a clutch problem 98% of the time. Could be a too high rpm problem though.
    Shifter hanging up=
shift arm going over center on the trans because it is installed wrong or is the wrong arm.
Dirty or worn shifter. I used to have to take the Hurst in my truck apart at least once a year and clean it all up, lube it and put it back and adjust it correctly. I did drive on a lot of dirt roads with it though.
Trans worn inside especially if you bought it used as an unknown quantity.
I know of a couple of Muncie 4 speeds in this area that got traded and handed around among a group of guys for several years and never installed in a car for years. One I know of for sure that no one who had it knew it's origin. I even had that one for a few months before I swapped it with someone else. Most of them are 50 or more years old and if you got your hands on the one that was in my 69 Cutlass S that one was abused something terrible but shifted perfect.

You probably got this figured out by now. Mine was doing the same thing. It finally got to where I had to pull it.

Synchro key broke. The silver spot to the right.

Does it always seem to shift well initially and only hang up after you have made multiple shifts..........or does it sometimes hang up the first time you shift it? Wondering if the problem only happens after you have depressed the clutch multiple times?

I got it working. It was only the linkage rod bushings. So simple for such a bad issue. Thanks for your help

Reverse never grinds on mine if I go into any forward gear first then directly into reverse. Stops the movement of the gears.
