can't pull the handle up to get into park, shifts fine from reverse to all lower gears, just can't lift it. any suggestions? thanks, Mike
B&M Quick silver or Star shifter? Did you pull cover ? Check to see on trains side if arm correct & cable adjusted correct. Check the pin or gate to see if line up is it mushroom or bent From R to P. P & R is simple Compared to N to 1st ( low ) Look @ pics /images on search on internet . Its been many years since I had one in my hands , I felt there was to many moving part from drive to low , & slop in , back when I had one they where $120 ish 80s NoW in 4 hundreds , For $ Hurst pro stick with Ball cl***ic Look is well made so are other pro stick models There are Other models by Hurst & B&M, 1975-1986 ish well made . My opinion stay away from the ratchet style shifters unless OEM
yeah, the first place I start with troubleshooting stuff like that is to look at it and try to figure out how it works. but I realize most people don't have that natural curiosity about mechanical things. Also been a long long time for me to have stared at the guts of a quick silver. Not quite as long as the star shifter I have in my truck, but it's a different mechanism with a lockout rod. The quick silver just has you lift the whole handle up.
yes, it's a QuickSilver, cover is off, shifts fine R-N-D, just won't pull up to go into park. cable moves freely as it runs thru R to D 123. hope these pics help. also went to B&M support site last nite, left message, no reply yet.
does it work when you disconnect the end of the cable? also it looks like the indicator tab is bent over, I wonder if straightening that would fix it?
i'll try that. this is the first time I've taken the cover off and don't know how that tab could have gotten bent. it looks like that might be the reason its not lifting. will let you know later what happens, thanks
straightening the tab did nothing. i took a shot of the other side, just in case. it seems like when in reverse there should be a slot for the pin thats directly under the tab to ride up in. will spend more time after i get back home.
you might try adding a few drops of light oil to the mechanism, between the plates...if there's an interlock piece in there that is stuck from old grease, it might free it up. And move it back and for many times, with the cable disconnected. That's how I have got other old mechanisms working.
solved the problem! and the problem was ME. I feel pretty stupid, real stupid in fact. I watched the B&M video again and saw that the shifter goes into park from drive. now, i just recently got this car and the few times i drove & parked it, i must have been doing it right without knowing. The last time, (after it sat for about a week) when i drove it in the garage, i tried to put it in park from reverse. that's normal for any GM auto, But not B&M. Now I know, and thanks to all who offered advise.
@mr.chevrolet I seen this in first pic Looked to be finial stop To in gauge Park "Top spring & pin Lock" I see you figured it out, Over years I have & have Many different shifter's , The worse /bad design I had was the I think V automatic , It use several spring steel finger like a feeler gauge , They would brake & loose there tension
I see you have it figured out now but sometimes times you have to put them in the ratcheting mode then back to park. I had one in my t-bucket when I first put it on the road
once i get my plate i'll be hittin' the highway and it'll be ingrained in my memory. I like that finned cover.
$20 dollar swapmeet wall hanger that I thought could be better used as a shifter cover, whittled it out on the drill press about 20 yrs ago.
