Projects Truck bed tool box?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by nate, Aug 31, 2010.

  1. I have the same question about storage...in my '34 Ford, I have limited space under the seat. Enough for a tool roll and a mini floor jack...but that's about it. The seat bottom pulls out easily, but the seat base is only 6" deep, not very much room even for tools.

Love the idea of finding a vintage automobile trunk, but that might take a while. What other fabbed wooden or metal covers/boxes could I use? I hate the idea of going to Harbor Freight and putting something brand new from them in the bed. I am blessed with some buddies who are terrific fabricators. Any other design ideas for the bed? Enough room for a duffle bag or small cooler or a sack of groceries to keep out of the weather.

    Thanks, guys.

I love Truck Bed Toolboxes and Weatherguards are the cream of the crop when it comes to buying one. One of the newer & smaller Black Powdercoat'ed boxes that don't sit up higher than the bed rails might look nice and be very secure and waterproof.

instead of ammo cans, how about a military surplus rocket box? it would fit lenghtwise across your bed and be big enough for just about everything you mentioned except maybe the cooler.. or somethin like .. this?

    X2

Rocket boxes are low and wide and that is better than tall and deep, as I hate having to dig through a pile of tools to get to the one I want at the bottom.

Here's a rocket box I found at my local Army-Navy store. A buddy of mine also got one; he bolted his to the floor of his vintage Land Rover.

If you prefer wood, here is a shot of another ammo box I got at the same A-N store. The twin to this one is strapped in between the tailgate and rear jump seat of my Jeep, where it tucks in perfectly.

Might be a little to "r-word", but I built a tool box out of a 55gal. drum for my pickup. Any round container would work, just takes a little fab work, but not much cash expenditure.

I went with an ammo box too, just bolted to the bed using the bedwood rail bolts.
looks okay, but I do think the military thing has been overused by the RR crowd (ammo can header dumps etc.) so I may paint it.

    Yours looks perfect as-is.

I agree that the RR crowd has overused the military theme, but to me an ammo box in the back of a vehicle (not a rr and not a 'theme' vehicle) looks cool, as opposed to those diamond-plate monstrosities. Diamond plate, now there is something that is way overused.

That's too small and will leak, even if you're using it for second hand emergency tools. I've been looking for "the ideal box" for years. My needs are light, strong, removable, lockable, roomy enough for a weeks clothes. Our Tractor Supply has a 48" box in the dreaded diamond plate, has a double latch that operates off the driver's side that meets all those criteria above but is too shiny and well, diamond plate.

Room for two bags of groceries. This does come in really handy as I'm an only vehicle guy, '49 1/2 Ton. I'm subscribed, let's keep the ideas flowing.

That is cool. You need another for the other side. I also like the cat-eye CHMSL.

Nice - I've got one of those, too, but not as clean. Dates from the 70s.

The similar wooden one I have in the back of my (open) Jeep leaks, too. I bent a U shape out of thin galvanized that fits inside as an inverted umbrella. It doubles as a big funnel - just bend it as needed.

I only carry tools from the cheap tool guy on the road, anyway, 'cuz eventually someone is going to take them, so even if they get wet, no problem.

The few items that I do not want to get wet, like Jersey gloves, get stowed in a baggie. And a dryer sheet keeps everything smelling fresh. ;)

[IMG] heres a box of unknown origin that I picked up at a swap meet for about 20.00 a few years ago. I built a wood liner for it with dividers for fluids, a jack and toolbox, tow rope and cleaning supplies, then spent a couple nights in the shop painting it up. so far it has been waterproof and has a lock and is bolted through the floor for security. I will post my trunk I will be installing on my truck later, its a late 20's or 30's trunk. Kind of like "Bad Bobs" on his truck. Its cool cause it came with my house when I bought it. The lady must have have it for a while cause she bught the house in 41 and died in 2005. when you open the trunk the liner inside has a print of the virgin mary.
