    I have just one question. Those Mopar doube-dips are fairly strong axles. Do you think it is wise to use hairpins with such a rigid axle ? I would think that axle is every bit as strong as the SuperBell tube. I don't intend to start a war, however I am of the ilk that believes "tube" axles are "designed" for 4-bar setups, or twin elliptic springs. We know that racecars have had tube axles with hairpins since the Ice Age, but the highways and byways that we drive our rods on are often not fit to use. Just wanted to say. Love the coupe. By the way, did you use a '35-'36 windshield frame ? Looks good. Hope to see ya at the Roundup. Good luck with ELVIS.

    Actually We were just talking about that, and it's not much.
    Just prep and paint the original steel and leave the hand made panels bare. Late night lol. I though doing that in shot coat of primer or at least the dykem for a photo op would be a good thing to do. There's going to be some door top alterations coming soon too, of course the plan is to save or rework the original stuff, then of course that plan is subject to change into one that includes making new stuff.

    Then there was some talk of measuring inches or feet of weld.

    My one buddy thinks that painting over all of the metal work would be really stupid, And 1/2 of me agrees with him.

  10. No, those come much harder than bottles although tequila helps.
    Metal working superpowers are drawn from the top of the scrap pile of things you've made. The bigger the scrap pile that you've built the stronger the powers are that you can draw from. The more hours you toss into the scrap pile the stronger you get. As was recently pointed out, the scrap pile here is pretty big. Think of the scrap pile as counter weight for the metal working superpowers. The bigger your pile the more you can handle.

    The guy across the way is bottling the stuff he makes. He got a big rush order of 4000 gallons and if he can deliver it on time there's 68,000 more under contract. We're gonna help him tomorrow, that should be fun.

    Working a second shift till midnight or close 5 nights a week on my own car for a few months straight kinda makes a fella think funny sometimes. :)

    I've just spent any spare time I could find in the last week, reading right through from the start after stumbling across your amazing build. It's been an awesome journey to put the coupe "right" in your eyes and from this side of the screen, I reckon you've nailed it every step of the way!

    I'm a beater by trade and can totally relate to the frustration of having to fix some other monkey's "repairs". Give me factory rust any day of the week! I also know the feeling of whatever we attempt to do in this trade, our skills/equipment always seem to fall just shy of what we aim to achieve and that in itself is what can drive us on to bigger and better things. I never seem to have the right tool for the job and feels like every task is the first time I've tried it, but I share your drive for perfection and don't seem to be able to quit till its done right.

    I wholeheartedly agree with all praise that has been given along the way and like everyone else, I'm looking forward to seeing it when you finally down tools on it.

    P.s can you point me to the thread you mentioned way back, about the fellow making a coupe from a Volkswagen. I've searched high and low but can't find it. Thanks.

  18. April has been one heck of a month.
    Lots going on but still managed to get the passenger side 1/4 cut in and tacked.
    Made a new bead section here as well.

    Started the door skins too.

    First step was to remove the old inner hinge support that was flimsy and riveted hinges.
    Made a new much stronger support and redesign for image.jpg bolt in hinges that have some adjustment.

    All is (Very) well...Car, wife, garage... How's the bank-book holding up?

    28 years ago I met my wife & on our second date I told her we were going to a Swap meet Sunday.
    Her reply was, "I'm not that kind of Gal!" I explained what a Car-guy swap meet was, so she said OK. Walking around Stafford Springs Ct. I spotted a few items I wanted & bought them. When I saw a Turbo 400 on the ground I asked her if she knew what it was, but she didn't. I asked her to guess
    so she said that it was a horn. After I stopped laughing she said I was weird, but she still liked me.
    Fast forward to the present, she knows a lot more now and can identify... a Hemi, a 409 and even knows what a Nailhead is! She still looks forward to car cruises, auto - truck & motorcycle events!
    The other day I asked her to identify an auto part at my friends garage... She said, I don't know what it is But... It looks "Motor-ry" (I told her it was a 9" Ford 3rd member, & she said,
    "That doesn't look like 9 inches to me!"

    It's been a long time since I checked in here. My project is on hold while we work on the property and house, but it looks like yours is moving on.

    I'm estimating that your finished body will only be 9% original tin, and at least 15% of the sheet metal will be mig wire.

    This is just an observation, and not critique. I love to weld, and compared to mulching, plumbing, masonry, and house remodeling, it's a joy. My plans for the Plymouth have changed to require a lot more of it.

    My wife is a gardener, and can't understand this, in the same way she can't understand the manly joys of racing motorcycles, shooting machine guns, or bashing red-hot steel with a big hammer.

  26. It's been a while since the last up date, but there has been progress.
    It just doesn't show well.

    Nothing fancy - not really shaping just down and dirty forming really. Like HVAC type stuff.
    Anyway here's what got started yesterday and done today.

    I did this Trans cover and tunnel a while ago and didn't love it a whole bunch but it was good enough to do its job. I don't really need the tunnel, but it adds a tremendous amount of strength to the floor, a back bone of sorts. B
    Then I set my seats in and the tunnel hit the bases by 1" crap !!! So since I never finished it then I guess it's time for a redo.

    So from some Jerry rigged bent up loops in outer space the shortened tunnel I got paper template - then I got this.

    Put in the brake and came up with the lower 1/2 of this

    Missed a pic or two of The upper section
    But once I had the lower 1/2 set in place it was just pretty simple to get up to the firewall.
    A few pieces of duct tape to support the paper then make a template.
    I cheated and put it in the slip roll to get the first part of most of it shape.
    Then I finished with it over my knee to tighten up the transition.
    The fire wall edge was turned up with vice grips then back to the stretcher to capture the firewall radius.
    So that the upper part of this

    Getting it to fit in is a sneak up on it dance. Tweak fit repeat trim tweak fit repeat.
