i recently acquired a truckstell overdrive and would like to adapt it to my ford and was wondering if anyone had been down this road.
I think it is Ruckstell not truckstell and Snyder's sells parts for them http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/modeltparts/ruckstellaxleparts
no its completely different from ruckstell. this is a mechanical od that is located right behind the trani not in the rear axle like the columbia or ruckstell units.
That sounds kewl David, although I'm not sure I've heard of that particular overdrive before. There used to be some behind the ****** o.d.'s in the 60's but I don't personally know of anyone who used one. I think one was Hone-o-drive or something like that. They used to advertise them for using deep gears and still being able to drive it on the street. Gonna make it to the swap meet next Sunday?
It's a Truckstell, a '40s - early '50s torque tube OD for Chevrolets ... old timers hated them and most were replaced because of reliability problems. You should let a restorer type person have a shot at it before cutting it up.
If you succeed in getting it installed don't shift to reverse while you are still moving forward because there are no replacement parts.
Remember a farm kid outside my old hometown in Ohio-had one them in a mildly hopped up '51 Chevy with wild pipes. He'd stop at a R.R. crossing on the way out of town at night (after closing time) then start up heading out the country road--6 gears as hard as it would run. You could hear him for miles. Whatta time.
