While we seem to be on the topic of integrity, I found this grille advertised as "in excellent condition"...you can be the judge. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=34204&item=2444673082
I'm beginning to find it amusing reading some of the adds on either e-bay or the local auto traders. What some people consider "excellent condition" or "solid" makes me wonder what poor condition would be. maybe the shell itself is choice, i don't know, but when i think "excellent" , i personally would think the shell and insert would be just that. at least without any damaged pieces. I read all the time, "car VERY solid!!" followed by "only needs trunk floor and minor quarter panel patches".. Very solid to me means solid, no rot or patches needed. but thats just me and i'm certainly not an expert on anything. oh well Rat...
I agree that something likr that grille is far from solid, but as far as whole cars go, I personally think that its all relative to location. Here in Gay Ass Michigan the weather sucks so bad, and there's so much salt used on the roads and stuff that NOTHING that hasn't been stored indoors is truly "solid". A car that you guys down south or out west would consider too rough to waste your time on is like gold here. If you guys saw what a michigander considered "rough" you'd wonder if it had EVER been roadworthy.
Good point on the location of the cars..I see where your coming from and hadn't thought of that, but i'm from upstate NY and the auto traders i'm reading are from western NY, central Ohio and northern PA, so we kinda got the same situation with salt. At least in NY that is. i went and looked at a '57 chevy years ago that stated very solid floors, trunk, etc..you know the deal i'm sure. When we got there, my dad and i looked at the car and it had very solid floors alright..because they were in the trunk. The one's in the car were shot. the guy bought new pans and never installed them. that was the best one i've seen to date. We've had some good laughs on that one over the years. I would love to have one of those "rough" southern or western rides though!! Rat..
Your points are well-taken with regard to location. I live in SoCal where most cars are completely free of rust; that is unless they have been brought in from out of state. So when I read an ad for a car that has no rust I believe that it should be in the same condition that it left the factory. Yet I see many ads for "rust free" cars even though I can see in the photos rust in all the usual places. I think that what they are trying to say is that the rust has not penetrated though the metal. I guess that it is still buyer beware for anything you buy these days...
in my experiance ,very solid or exellent condition, usually means they want to much for thier item. they have been reading to many trader magazines and see those big prices. problem is they rarly ever get those big prices. you can ask any price you want for an item, what you get for it is a whole different story.
