Now if I could only find my hose for my compression tester... I just used it recently to change valve springs and pressure up cylinders. Speaking of forgetting stuff and wasting time.

Even worse when it was actually right where it was supposed to be in my toolbox to be looked over twice by me...

So, for the play by play...5 cylinders are right at 120 and number 6 is 140. But, I found the problem cylinders. 1 & 2 won’t build compression. So, pulling the valve covers to see why. Guessing I might find some bent pushrods or something next?

Or.....as I mentioned before.....the studs will pull up to compensate for the stuck valves rather than bend the pushrods....but either could happen. Good luck

Well, all the valves are opening and closing like they should at least visually and none of the studs are pulling out on the drivers side. And, no visible messed up parts.

However, on the drivers side, #2 intake isn’t opening and #4 exhaust isn’t either. So, I pulled those two rockers to see if the lifters were going up and down or not or if the cam was flat or something. Anyway, with no pressure on the lifter other than my thumbs pushing down on the pushrods so they won’t jump out, they seem to go up and down about right. I popped the two valves and they don’t at least seem to be stuck now if they were. I put the rockers back on and it almost just seems like the lifters have bled down enough that they aren’t pushing the pushrods up enough but just taking up the “cushion” in the lifter when it tries to open the valves. Maybe the valves are just sticky in the guides? Anyway, so far no real messed up stuff just sticky parts.

Sadly, the goal on this deal was just to make it run good enough to move it around the farm under its own power or I would suggest at least a freshen up type rebuild. But, here we are trying to just make it run...

Taking a break for a little bit to work on the mower so I can mow today too. More to come.

With two dead holes on compression, I’d think it would at least try to fire and start on the other 6?

edit: but before you mentioned 1 and 2 had no compression, but now 2 and 4 have valves not opening. That’s a mind boggler.

I know your ORIGINAL plan, but my default response is "never pass up an opportunity to put a BIGGER cam in it"!

Yea, the way the compression was down on 1 and 2 but then I found 2 and 4 valves not opening is a little strange. That’s what is leading me to lifters not pumping up yet. I bet it will fire off now, but walking away for a few minutes. Mower deck needs some welding and since it cooled off a bit today, mowing seems like a good idea.

I’ll likely throw plugs in and try to fire it later this evening. Oiling the cylinders down some made it crank faster as expected.

Rather than lifters not pumping UP......have they bled DOWN trying to open two valves that are stuck ??? The first weak link may be lifter bled down and push rods not bent yet or studs pulled up yet. Some light oil down along valve stems and tapping with brass or plastic hammer might loosen up or confirm what you really have. Let them soak while you mow. Multi task

Good idea. Just did that before starting mowing. Thanks. Oh, and I did get the valves to move. And, yes, I believe that the valves not wanting to open is what pushed oil out of the lifters.

Once the cylinders are soaked for a while, Crank the engine over checking for spark. Fix as needed, then put some fresh plugs in and spray some carb cleaner/ether in the carb and see if it pops.

Ya know, if you bought some goats, you could sell the mower and solve one of your problems;)

We have a goat and he is a PITA. He just hangs out with the horses for the most part.

Pretty awesome end to a weekend and a Sunday.......fresh tomatoes picked and marinating with red onion for salad....just poured a Jack Daniels and charcoal is ready for top sirloin.
Oh......sorry about the goats.....we had goats when we were growing up because our youngest brother was allergic to cows milk. We not only had to live with them.....we had to milk them by hand.....never have liked our youngest brother !!

My great grandparents had goats. When my grandad was courting grandma, he went visiting one day for dinner. When he went out to leave, there was a goat on top of his 28 Chevy Roadster. With all four feet punched through the top, running in place. He never had a goat on his farm. Can't say I blame him.
My son and his wife were gifted three pygmy fainting goats. Their "friends" even threw in the barn, the feed, and all the other goat related stuff. I told him he should have talked with me first. When someone is eager to gift you any kind of critter, they have a reason. I know because we did it with some ferocious geese. They kept the goats about a year and passed them on to unsuspecting friends.

Speaking of goats...I sure should have kept my HAMB-friendly one. I had a 64 post car that I was building as a 60’s drag car. But, getting married, going back to college, and adopting kids necessitated selling it in pieces. :(

  27. Gotta love goats. We have a petting zoo and about this time of year they sell off some of the baby goats, if you have enough property, etc. They get along with horses very well.

Well, I sure don’t need any more animals of any type! And, somewhat because of the time needed to care for the ones we have, I haven’t tried to start the 283 again yet...

So...it busted right off after putting the plugs back in on starting fluid. Seems my problem was likely twofold? Dry cylinders and a couple stuck valves? Whatever the case, headed to get 5 gallons of fresh fuel and make it run on actual gas now coming through the cleaned gas tank, new fuel pump and all new fuel lines. Oh, and I guess I need valve cover gaskets now too so might as well pick those up at the parts store. Thanks for all the help guys. I learned something...again.

Well, diverted my trip when my son just showed up from mowing a yard with fresh gas and finding a set of new valve cover gaskets in a kit on the shelf. Back to work...
