Been thinking I want to move the bumpers in tighter to the body on my 53 chevy wagon. Looking at it I will need to recontour the bumper ends (shorten them up) so they do not hang back the front wheel opening. and in the rear I will almost remove the rear filler (valance) panel betwen the body and bumper Does anyone have any pics of this done.. think of sinking the grill bar and teeth in a little also so it does not look alike it is protruding out past the bumper.
I've been thinking about doing the same on my '53. I think the front looks good, but they sure didn't hit it with the rear bumper. I haven't thought about this much, but is there a long enough peice at the sides that you could take a section out and weld the end of it back on? I don't know if that made any sense or not, but hopefully it did.
My buicks rear bumper was cut on the ends and wrapped tighter to the body. You will need a good plater to clean it up and it will be costly for the copper work.
I think you should view some pics of this modification before you do anything. It sounds cool, but from a styling standpoint it seems that it would over emphasise the already present "Flattness"of the front of the hood &front bumper of 53's. Don't take this as bashing of you, your car or your Ideas. I just dont think the work involved will be worth the end result. Billy

Even though I've thought of doing the same, perhaps a completely different bumper would look better? I don't know what would fit or anything, but I'm sure something would look cool.
I've seen it done and it looked pretty good but it wasn't done too far. The guy kept the filler panel but it was shorter than stock so it looked right without looking like he hit something. In back the ends need to be brought in on the sides as well as shortened rather than just taking a little out of the center to keep the proper contour around the rear of the body. The closer you get to the body the more noticable the shape of the rear bumper doesn't match the body.
on the subject of using other bumpers...I have always been a split bumper fan, some old mopars and pontiacs had bumpers that would look (in my opinion) absolutely BITCHIN on there... Im gonna see if I can find a pic of a car like yours online and photochop them thar bumpers closer for ya... bbl
