So much yes. My brain is still wired to that time. I can't wait to do it again. Keep at it man, we'll keep it alive by a string!
I've been working on the steering and it got a bit out of hand- but I'm digging on it. I have a keyhole that the box fit between the frame, starter and engine block. I made a riser- started with this idea I had on the first roadster using a u bolt and a pruned f-1 box. Pics should explain- I made this a frame riser, boxed and sleeved it, plan to sleeve the frame so the u bolt goes through the frame and there will be holes in the bottom where the nuts will be frenched up inside- I notched and keyed it- the riser will get chromed along with the box and the pitman arm which is a work in progress. Still a lot of finish work to do- here's my progress from this week- Hey Mike I don't remember the brand- it went through the shop fire and the brass tag melted off! I had a 90 degree attachment for it too but it was lost during cleanup ;-(
Hey Tuck I have been meaning to ask a question about the steering wheel. You said you used foil to clean it up. How does that work? Thanks
I was posting on the wrong thread I was talking about the Superior wheel you got out of the junkyard you polished with tin foil. sorry
Some progress today- Worked on mounting the shocks while I'm waiting for the new U-bolt to be made. I ended up using the T-mount on these old NOS shocks for the bottom I got from @hiboy32 and the top mount is f-1 mounted to the crossmember. The bottom is attached to the side of the bone, I c-notched it and drilled and tapped it- will tig and blend it all in. I know a lot of guys mount them in front but I didn't like the way it interrupted everything and the top mount kind of disappears this way-
Ugh I'm trying not to post comments on this build. It just can't help myself killer work so far can only imagine the end result.
Worked on the other Shock today- the front end is starting to shape up- I made templates to mirror all the mounting holes on both the frame and the bones and then duplicated all the bends- both shocks mounted. Worked out mounting the rear shocks- going to mount them tomorrow and finish welding and blending the bones for the shocks. Does anyone have any 28/29 front perch U-bolts? I had some new ones made but I have one and it looks so good... Tuck-
Upper threads are worn from the bottom plate. If you want them PM your address and they will be in the mail tomorrow. Really like the looks of the front end, look forward to seeing how you bracket the cycle fenders. Bob
I'm gonna pick up the ones they made for me tomorrow if they don't look as good I'll take you up on this for sure!!! Thanks man-! Another quick update - Mounted the rear shocks- made the upper mount and lower mount is modified f-1 mated to the bone mount on the axle, the shock looks like an extreme angle but it's just shy of 30 degrees like the fronts-
Cool build..... as always. Nothing says hot rod regularly driven on the street in the 50's & 60's like cool "spare tire ring" cycle fenders!
Ok after getting everything in place I actually extended the f-1 shock mount 2" so I can't bottom out the shock at all- brought it just to the bottom of the scrub line- Now It'll bottom out on the kickup before the shock-
Pretty stoked- Fresh and flakey out of the forge they actually turned out pretty damn good! With a little grind and polish they should look as good as originals- I needed the rears an inch longer because I sleeved the rear crossmember to fit a 40 style front spring.
I spun these on while visiting the shop working on tree house parts for maple today (-; (swinging boat) I saved some ford castle nuts and will drill a hole in them when I get them setup and trimmed to the right length and I'll lose those modem looking nuts- back ubolts were spot on- brought the back down a couple inches and the suspension is stiff! Should ride like a plank! Tuck-
Tuck I wish you'd quit posting pics of the rear axles in the roadster and the destroyer. Every time you do when I mow my lawn and trip over my Olds axle out behind the shed, I get to daydreaming of using it in the east coast Pontiac powered 30/31 model A I have planned four builds down the line. It was intended for a gasser build a couple more down the line. Your messing with my parts stash man[emoji851] Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Update: Pedals! I took the arch/arc out of the pedals- cut off the brake pedal on the band saw and repositioned it to go straight up- plan to make little shift booties for them in the floor- there is seriously no room for floor pedals but I didn't want hanging pedals don't have room on the firewall either. I ended up using 40 pedals and will run linkage back and then forward again on a jack shaft to push in the clutch arm.
Started to work out the linkage / jack shaft for the clutch- I machines a solid shaft to fit inside a piece of dom tubing and between the band saw and Lathe turned out an end like a 39 trans- this way I can take it all apart just like factory. I swapped out the clutch pedal for another brake pedal because it goes straight up and down and doesn't have that bow in it- really dig this like upside down ansen pedals- need to finish manipulating the pedals around the column so I'll have to remount the body to figure that out... depending on the angle I think I can shorten them an inch to stay below the column shaft- I'll lose a little leverage... but should be fine.
