Haha @Tim no trade secret I used a medium point oil based sharpie paint pen, I almost used oneshot... We will see how it holds up, I’ve heard it works well. Markal paint pens work too. I really like the look. It’s so easy if you need to touch them up every so often doesn’t seem like it would be a big deal. Once the pen starts flowing it lays out really nice and flat. I used lacquer thinner to clean the rubber and help promote good adhesion before applying.

I managed to scrounge up a couple more quarts of nos lacquer today and some Thinner! (Thank you Perry)

tcb global makes lacquer and thinners for any color from old paint chips… lacquer is so fun to spray after spraying 2k urethane’s and isocyanate laden clears… no hardner, just mix one to one and go. IMG_8566.jpeg
    IMG_8564.jpeg

on the hunt for more nos DCA468 clear if anyone has any.. or for some silver acrylic lacquer for the base color for my candy flames. Message me if you have some you want to sell.

Super curious where this is headed. Never pictured it with flames but I’ve yet to see you do something I thought was bogus. Staying tuned for certain.

Thanks guys and thank you Outback-

Tim- I’m planning on spraying them in candy which will have the depth of the above pic (not style), pagen gold and candy apple red blended over a silver base, then pinstriped and the whole truck panel striped. Kind of like the California kid only different. I’ll spray test panels first.

This truck would look great just black or any solid color but these decisions are based on things I liked as a kid. When I built models Metalflake Sapphire Blue was one of my favorite colors which is pretty close to the Lemans blue I found. Jerry Iversons blue 34 was another influence, his was more of a wedgewood blue- a lot lighter but that truck as a whole imprinted on me, with the chrome and zodiac blue seats… then there was this wicked black 69 fastback mustang that Peanuts painted that had candy Watson style flames that has been imprinted in my head from when I worked at Perry’s.

-it’s all meant to be fun and for the kid in me.

Im at deer camp and I’m laying here feeling what’s left of the tips of my fingers… I sanded all the rims and they’re almost ready for sealer… I sanded so much my finger tips are raw.

I’m going to seal these in epoxy next and then 5 coats of lacquer base and 5 coats of clear!

l know some people are going to question why on earth would I use such antiquated paint but the way lacquer ages it’s going to look legit… I actually love how lacquer checks, cracks and fades(and shines up). Versus the super high gloss you get from todays 2k urethane’s.

I ended up getting a full gallon of kondar from Perry too. I haven’t sprayed kondar in over 20 years!

I ordered the candy concentrates yesterday to make my lacquer kandy and a bunch of green 3M fine line and masking tape. The deal with green 3M tape is that the adhesive they use is patented and won’t lift paint… there are no solvents in the adhesive. Normal tape will lift fresh lacquer.

I’m thinking of maybe just buying a replacement back panel for a real rpu and just shorten and narrow the doors. Or find real roadster doors. Are the hinges in different locations between a roadster and closed cab I wonder? They’re a grand shipped and that way I can just run a normal folding top and run side curtains. I don’t know whose roadster the red one is but I love how they gave quarter windows in the side curtain. So cool. I’m definitely having side curtains like this made.

Originally when I did this I was thinking about making a lift off top… but after a couple summers of ripping around in the shoebox convert I want a top that is easy up and down so I can drive it in any weather. The only good time to drive a convert is so limited… No hot sun, no rain no cold… it has to be cool days or warm evenings.. otherwise it just gets uncomfortable.

My convert is rough but my daughters love bombing around in it and getting picked up from school. I just put it away for the winter on Halloween. IMG_5736.jpeg IMG_5737.jpeg IMG_5647.png IMG_6549.jpeg IMG_5739.png

The red car looks like a UK car to me. The “quarter” window is rad. And your right good “roadster” weather is extremely limited unless your a roadster guy and then there’s just no helping you and the weather doesn’t matter.

stoked to see you back at it.

also I’d order the Mac’s piece via eBay if it’s an option. They’ve been bought and sold a few times and it’s turned into a shit show every time I try to get something. The loop hole seems to be that the bay will be up their ass real quick if you don’t get your goods.

my last order they had me on back order for two years, when I called to check on it the last time and cancel the order I was informed my back order had been canceled last July when they were sold again. Wish the guy I talked to in August knew that.

    anyhow. Carry on.

Thanks Rod, I made it back in 2012, the best part is sanding them in it you can do it standing up. I designed it to be a frame rotisserie for a hot rod and have used it for that but I made brackets for the wheels. Painted many sets on this thing..

I think I have a pathway to making this a real RPU… may have found a roadster cowl/commercial AA, then I’ll just order repro roadster doors and back panel from Ecklers and use the subfloor I have. I found a thread flop built his roadster out of one.. some minor fab work and it’ll look legit… I can use my Chrysler dash and mold that into the door transition. I’m really excited about it!

  19. Tuck, been rumors around about Ecklers not fulfilling orders. Seems others have been going thru ebay as the vendors are held to a higher standard and ship quicker. No experience myself but others may chime in.

Tore the intake down and polished it back to its former glory, it’s far from perfect but good enough.

I need to make a finned block off plate for the thermostat as the 55 uses the one on the crossover.

    Carbs are rebuilt.

    I have a deal on a roadster cowl… so it’s on-!

Tuck, what do you shoot your photos with? Your shots are incredible. It's amazing to go back through the whole build and watch the transformations. Fun stuff. Now it's a Hemi with two fours? Nice.

    just an iPhone, thanks man!!

I built this truck with the yblock because I had it at the time, it was after the shop fire. I like y-blocks but they’re not as cool or traditionally as common in an open car like this than they are in a shoebox coupe or a kustom. I decided to put the yblock in a shoebox. I measured one day and realized with an adapter the hemi was almost a perfect fit. I just need to change the mounts and fully box the rails.

the normal hemi fan is a 4 blade and ugly, I have one I cut down on my roadster, this six blade came off a 1956 plymouth with a 6. I’ll measure it, it’s not as wide as a 4 blade. The fans are interchangeable. (Lots of parts are)

Looks nice and clean! Are you boxing the frame because of the additional weight of the hemi?

    Brian, grab that fan! :D

Tim, I’m boxing for the added weight and the 250+ Hp for sure. I should’ve done it in the first place but it’ll be easy to do- I boxed the side with the steering box because it’s cross steer. The cragar adapter I got is Bitchen because it puts the starter on the other side so I can retain my cross steer setup… and these cast iron manifold are center dump straight down… shouldn’t have any clearance issues. (Maybe the hood??) we will know soon enough!

I'm planning on running the cast iron manifolds and then straight pipes out the back hooked to a pair of chrome kick stand pipes under the running boards.

The air cleaners I have on top of those carbs, the base is not the right size but I found these through vintage speed. They're cast and the outside is polished. One more thing to check off the list. Waiting for the gaskets for the base of the carbs... had some and lost them- I'll find them after the new ones show up. I can't wait to get the intake turn key.
    s-l1600 (3).jpg

Managed to find a 57 12 volt generator. Its missing the pulley but I have one off a 56 6 volt that I'm going to swap on once I rebuild this dirty generator.
    s-l1600 (2).jpg

Found an NOS fuel pump, we will see how the rubber is. Hot heads makes an adapter to run an LA style fuel pump... may go that route if this doesnt work out.

Found this pic- gives an idea of what’s in my head color wise in the direction I’m headed for those scratching their heads. Weesner rules.
