For those of you that follow me on IG most of this is old news- but school is out and I actually got 8 hours of sleep for the first time in months...

I've been taking college classes on top of teaching... then throw in my wife getting her Masters and we have little maple now so time has been all but maybe 3 days a month in the shop (if that). I have a student that comes up on saturdays sometimes more of my welding students stop in- gives me a chance to teach more than I can at the school. We hooked him up with a welder and a tool box and located his first car. ( a 78 ford pickup truck)

I'm renting the old high school shop- we call it the OLD SCHOOL-



moved all my equipment in that was in storage last fall and other than the weekend my wife has Air Force Drill- I get a chance to work on the truck.

Its been something I've been looking forward too since my shop burned down-

I shortened my torq tube, changed the front crossmember, bones, mounted the pedals and steering... pretty much have a rolling chassis now...









I had a rusty 78 case I pulled apart and zephyr gears that came out of an overdrive that went through the shop fire- I got a couple books on rebuilding these- was pretty fun going through it.




took some weight out of the flywheel with the brake lathe-



Have not had a chance to work on it in a couple months but now that school is out I'm hoping to get the chassis finished and painted.

strip and plate and dip in yellow chromate-

I plan on painting it 59 buick wedgewood blue and I'll paint traditional flames on it striped in white. I'm calling this one the Blue Ox- Nice Kanadian name. There is a local 34 pickup owned by a guy named Iverson that was built in the sixties with a nailhead and is painted a similar color. Full show rod pickup- I used to drool over it when I was a teenager... and he would always say you can buy it! At that time I think he wanted 12 grand which might as well have been 120 grand to me. Now I'm just building my interpretation of it.

Looking beautiful. I didn't realize it was an early Y block. Is it a 239? Rad if so, goes with the build what you can with what you got theme.

Just got caught up with the progress.
So nice to see great things happening for you and your family.

 

The Y-block is a brand new overhaul- assembly lube is the only thing taking up residence inside- the builder painted it without priming the block... Used that bill hersch? Stuff- and it was starting to flake off- you could literally blow it off with an air gun.

Opted for aircraft stripper and stripped it bare naked-

Prepping the trans, engine and next is the rear end.... Plan on painting them a kandy flake copper/gold with some fades. Oil pan and pulleys etc (everything that's not aluminum and bolts on) is getting polished and chromed!

Really love the way engines look... Both apart and together. Working on these engines I really grow to appreciate the engineers that put this stuff together!



This whole drive line will be new! -don't think I've ever started out like that before- usually end up with a running engine or recently rebuilt... Can't wait to fire it for the first time and shift it into first!

Tuck, you are an inspiration to Grant and I. It just goes to show what can be accomplished by someone with the expertise, means and motivation. Hope to see you at Iola.

 

I'm not sure... they were a swap meet find and honestly just temp- I plan to replace them but they look great! They're a truck tire of some sort but have a fluted edge and look OLD.

 

Thank you Mr. Webber- We will be at iola! Can't wait for the show... your son inherited a new nick name... Spaulding haha... I've been teaching him the ways of swapping. I hope he's paying attention!!!

 

Are you going to create some motor mounts at the sides of the block or bellhousing?

Saw pictures of the chassis on the single axle behind the ranchero on IG. Awesome looking package!

Question for you... Just went through this thread again, but didn't see any final pictures of your front motor mount. Wheels are turning in my head (Olds 303 in an A frame) and I'd just like to see how you mounted yours, since both Y's and Old's have centre front mounts. Thanks in advance!

 

Yes a single "dog bone" on the steering side to counter the torque. I need to move the steering back one inch and then I'll weld the bracket for it. @alchemy
