Tulsa Buried Car Already Opened

  1. If I were the winner, I wouldn't want Boyd... or anyone... to touch a thing on that car.
What did the rules say back in '57...? When the car was dug up it would be given to the winner... or... when the car was dug up it would be paraded around and fucked over by TV hackers and THEN belong to the winner...?

As it sits, the car is a piece of history. Restore it and it's just another Plymouth Belvedere.
The winner has a real money maker on his hands if he decides to park it and charge admission to see it... as is.
I'd sue someone's ass if they knock so much as a flake of rust off...

That was my thinking.. Move it right over to the Smithsonian as it is and let us all get a look at it, as it was pulled from the ground. I'm sure a couple of old guys in Tulsa have passed away this morning, having had lived past their days on purpose just to get the chance to see the car dug up.

Restoring it defeats the purpose, in my mind. It is a great American experiment with unanticipated (the the originators) results!

Besides, they left the battery connected for 50 years, and it might be dead. They probably figured no one would know about betteries in 2007, so they left it hooked-up.

I hope it is restored and put back on the road and not put somewhere to rot quicker now that it has more oxygen.

HAHA! that made me furious! what a dumbass.

  10. You're killing me!!! That's funny... sheesh

OK -A few things from my perspective:

Boyd & crew - they were there because someone on the the Tulsarama committee thought that it would be good for publicity for the Tulsarama. Whoever made this decision may or may not be a car person but if they are it's a safe bet they're not a HAMBer.

Boyd's lack of applause - I'm sure he got applause but the sound technicians had the house mics down so the sound from the stage wouldn't have excessive background noise.

Boyd's interest in the car - Boyd has no claim to ownership of the car. Whoever the population guessing contest winner is will be the owner if they're alive and can be found. If no winner or next of kin can be found, it's Oklahoma State lost property for 5 years then it's most likely going to the Tulsa Historical Society. (I hope this is the fate of this car.)

Boyd's interest in being there - This is two-fold. 1) He's a car guy even if his tastes are VERY different than most of ours here. 2) Boyd's a business man and this was publicity for his show, from which he benefits financially. Money talks and like ANY good business man, Boyd listens.

    The Pink Dress MC
    - She's part of the Tulsarama organization and not a professional emcee. I think she did quite well considering the whole thing was live and unscripted. Besides, she was sooo damn hot it melted my raspberry sherbet. ;) (I'm kidding, calm down...)

The Vault - This thing was destined to flood. Sure it was made of gunnite like an in-ground pool BUT pools are covered with a coating of hydraulic plaster that water impervious. This layer is what keeps the water in a pool. Gunnite is porous and used as the main structural element in pools, not as the final waterproofing step.

The condition of the car - Sure, I was hoping to see a pristine (this is the correct spelling guys) car come out of the ground but it wasn't to be. I too would like to see the car cleaned up but that apparently isn't going to happen anytime soon. Remember, this car is part of a time capsule and not a potential project car at this point. It's going to be displayed as a time capsule piece, at least for the time being.

Thanks to Crab - A huge thanks for your continuing coverage. You have my vote as Newbie of the year.

Right now there are space aliens circling the earth watching this. When they attack they will take the form of 57 plymouths, because they know now that if we ignorant, loser earthlings are this captivated by a rusty, f#%king piece of shit 57 Ply. dug out of a hole, they've got us conquered!

And a unibody car still has a frame, it's just welded to the body and usually made of thinner steel than a conventional frame.

I think the car should be washed off. The people who were there in 1957 most likely want to see the car in the closest condition as to what it looked like when it was buried. Now the car is obviously in bad shape but it would look WAY better with the chrome shined up and no mud on it. A few years ago we went with my grandma and the rest of the family to go look at the farmhouse she had grown up in as a kid. It had been abandoned for 20 years and was obviously in bad shape. She would not even go inside because she wanted to remember the house as it was, not as a dilapitated empty house with crumbling plaster. I cant speak for the people who were there in 1957 but if i was there i would want to see the car cleened up.

What!?, real car guys cant google an druel over some old iron? I thought this is what this damn forum was for...having fun with old cars! I personaly am grateful for those who have contributed to this. From the first time I heard about it on "another forum" I couldn't wait to see what was left of the 'ol girl. I agree with the "half n half" idear. Doing this, might keep both camps happy.
