It wasn't mentioned here yet, but why a '57 Plymouth? What was the initial reason for dumping this car in the hole? (assuming because it was just donated maybe)

I think someone said that the Plymouth was an advanced production car. It was buried to celebrate the centenial (100th year as a state) on its 50th anniversary (1957).

Why a Plymouth Belvedere? The official line, as stated by Jubilee Chairman W.A. Anderson, was, "In our judgment, Plymouth, is a true representative of automobiles of this century, with the kind of lasting appeal that should still be in style 50 years from now." Little did Anderson or anyone else know that Chrysler Corp.'s Forward Look would be passe' four years later. This came out of the Old Cars Weekly newspaper. Steve

In the 40s-50s Plymouth was the 3rd best selling car line most years.Wasn't till the 80s-90s that Chrysler pissed it away.

I just skimmed thru an article and saw that they are suppose to announce a winner on june 22,07. If any ties then they pull the name out of a hat. Everything is on a microfilm. The winner or closest heir will have until Aug,24 07 to claim it. Then if a winner is identified then on sep. 14 07 there will be a press conference handing the ownership over. Nothing like dragging it out. Steve

Tulsa - The time capsule meant to withstand a nuclear attack and keep a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere in good condition for 50 years apparently didn't do such a good job. And, now many people are wondering if the same fate awaits another Tulsa time capsule that was put in the ground less than ten years ago.

A 300-thousand-dollar prototype of the 1998 Plymouth Prowler was buried in a time capsule at Centennial Park on 6th Street in January 1998 to commemorate Tulsa's 100th birthday. It is expected to be unearthed in 2048.

But, now that the 1957 time capsule has obviously succumbed to the pressures of Mother Nature, will its younger sister suffer the same fate?

It's unlikely. The 1998 vault was made out of aluminum, not concrete like its predecessor. And, the specially-designed capsule is pressurized to make sure the car comes out in mint condition.

We here at NewsChannel 8 have a slight interest in the time capsule. A KTUL coffee mug, a tape of one of our newscasts, an 8's the Place license plate and several other NewsChannel 8 items are buried along with the Prowler.

Hundreds of other donations, including an ATM machine and a hockey stick with the signatures from the Tulsa Oilers hockey team, were also buried.

The '98 time capsule was actually unearthed 44 years early. In 2004, the 15-ton capsule was dug up and moved 100 yards to a different spot because a parking lot of a senior citizens center was being built over the original location.

Did Boyd have to go home with the ugly rims he was probably going to try to put on it?

  11. Probably too much plastic in the newer cars for rust to be an issue. Or, who gives a shit about the Prowler. CORRECTION-someone end this thread. It's outlived it's usefulness.

they said during the thing that they did not know where the microfilm was. but some paper with the list of entrants to the contest was in the time capsule, along with the postcards. so they should have no problem identifying the winning name. Finding the winning person is another issue.

When you say fully uncovered, do you mean all of the mud washed off?

I'm still waiting for the music that played when Christine started rolling back the odometer. They should have used that for the unveiling.

You can officially kill this post after my last post.....
I updated my gallery with the underbody rust pictures that were requested here. I also met some damn fine HAMB members and enjoyed the week of events, but am ready to put it all behind me and move on.
I did make an ass of myself and rack the pipes in my 383 powered 69 Camaro on Saturday when Boyd and entorage (with film crew in tow) was walking across the street in front of me.

    Thanks,
Looking foward to seeing everyone at the HAMB Drags this year!

  21. Was the smell from the car, or ol' Codpiece hisself ??

They should have just had a DJ who was familiar with the movie, then when they couldn't get the doors open he could have cut in some Little Richard... "Keep a-knockin but you can't come in..."

l think enough has been said, it is finished and old news.
Boyd will get a rebuild out of it for his show and make$$$$ from it and look like a hero.
As much as l hate the loser.
So l think this thread should be closed down and 30 something pages to look at is way to much.
But its been very interesting reading, and lve been waiting for years for this day to come of age.
To see what finally has happened to the old Plymouth Belvedere that was buried 50 years ago..

A merchant donated the plymouth who took it in trade on a new ford. A lady won the plymouth who thought she was registering for a new air conditioner. Sounds like no one wanted the car fifty years ago. If a winner is found this time around I wonder if they will take it.

  28. Well,,,I gotta say I'm glad my computer was down over the weekend.

The whole thing has been like a train wreck,,,you say you don't what to look but ya do!

From the start it was a joke,,,,too many people involved that knew less about cars or diging up artifacts than my 7 year old granson.

The car appears to be less than desirable but it will probably fetch a tidy sum on E-bay or Barret-Jackson,,,,

I haven't seen any video(dialup),,so I have no idea what mr. C had to say or how backward he was,,,but why on Gods green earth did they have him there in the first place,,,,,,,

Why not someone like the CEO of GM,,,,Chip Foose,,,Carrol Shelby,,,,Or LiL' Mike?

I don't understand city politics,,,,Here in my hometown or Tulsa,,I guess I'm just not Dumb enough not think at all! HRP

Looking at the lift the car is sitting on in this picture, that is the lift I was talking about in another thread about lifts in small garages. My cousin invented that lift and owns the company. They are located in Broken Arrow, OK.

Just saw your picture Crab and noticed that in the background. Sorry for bumping this post, but it'll die eventually.

Thanks for all of the great coverage.
