-The one thing in the tank's favor was that it was immersed in a peat bog.

First, it's a peat bog, not a stream or clear lake. Plenty of water, yes, but not constantly refreshed water. Second, it's peat- decayed plant matter. The decay process tends to consume most of the free oxygen dissolved in the water, and it's that oxygen that causes the rust.

Rust is the combining of oxygen with the metal- water with little or no oxygen in it, actually preserves metal, by sealing it from oxygen.

(And yes, oxygen is one of the components of water, but that water is in a very stable molecule, and doesn't tend to spontenously split off- that takes energy, and short of some guy standing there with a car battery and a set of jumper cables, isn't gonna happen.)

Heres the main site...LOADS of stuff being pulled up or otherwise reclaimed from junkyards and where have you. Seems they've even pulled up bodies from both sides in uniform and looking like they had only just gone into the peat. When you consider the incredible 2000 year old mummies they've found in other peat bogs, its not hard to believe these bodies and uniforms are in excellent condition.
BTW...the engine in the tank was supposedly free and once cleaned internally it ran without a rebuild!

I'm SURE I found this site from a post on here last year. Can't remember who actually first posted it, but I'm just the reposter...
    Good luck on actually READING!!!

I have been following these threads and the website loosely since I heard about this. I knew *knew* it would be garbage.

They would have been better off storing it in a climate-controlled warehouse and forgetting about it. Burying something underground? And not in Arizona? Come on.

...we're not dealing with the brightest bulbs here...Politicians...even in '57...it was a publicity stunt and nothing more. Shame. Now the brightest bulbs seem to be the people of 2007 selling tickets and making money off it...outrageous...but what do I know?

Car is garbage. End of story.

When I look at the pictures posted I see tattel tale water marks on the inside of the tomb that suggests a lot of diffrent water levels over the years,... if air was pushed out by water as it came in,... what replaced the lost area when the water subsided ?,.... my guess is it drew air from somewhere,........... I could be wrong, but I think it's gonna be a big rusty, stinky, scaley mess,........ But someone will take what is left and restore it,... as in, disconnect the title off of the car and pull another car made out of new and old parts under it, and discard the rest,... Ta-Da ! (IMHO)

I would expect a lot of green and blue fuzzy mold and a gawd awful smell.

I wouldn't have thought that there was a chance in hell that the car would have survived... as iron rusts, it turns back to Iron Oxide. (Oxide ~ Oxygen) The oxygen would come out of the steel as it rusted away. The process of the car rusting would supply the vault with oxygen.
Rust never sleeps. You can lay as thick a paint on as you want but iron will revert to iron oxide leaving just the painted skin over time. Iron wil revert back to it's basic form over time but so far nobody has been able to lay a time line on how just how long the process takes "when every necessary precaution is taken". This could prove interesting.

Funny you should mention that. I worked at the RMS Queen mary for years. That ship has been in salt water since the early 1930's. When you walk down near the keel it has moisture but there still isn't major leakage after all these years.

I knew it was going to be bad, as they had to use Japanese heavy equipment, as the U.S. made equipment was too expensive to rent.

Looking at all the historical photo's I notice there were no blacks in Tulsa in 1957.

I wonder if these chicks are wearing underwear? or is that just a California thing to leave off...

  21. I think a cool ending to the story, and good publicity for all involved... would be for the winner to get the keys... then to have Boyd put the rusted hulk on a flatbed, haul it to CA, restore it to original condition, then give it back to the owner.

Makes me warm and fuzzy just thinking about it.

    Sam.

What a time to find out you locked the keys in the car and the glass is the only thing that's any good.

Dug it up two days early.... Well pee down my back and tell me it's raining...!

Anyone want a nice room, downtown Tulsa, 3 blocks away for Friday and Saturday ? I'll need to cancel them later today. Rather than spend the money in gas and drive 5 hours to Tulsa I'm gonna just sit here on the web and watch this baby unwrap.

Why they couldn't wait till Friday to pop the lid just facinates me. Took the wind out of my Plymouth loving sails. Taking my very hard earned dollars and now spending them here locally with friends and family.

What the hell, go anyway.. After all you haven't actually seen what's inside the wrapper. Rusty or not, I'd take it in just to say I been there done that.

People in Tulsa are retarded. You're smart, it's just a big scam.

Hint: Concrete sweats below ground. Ask anyone with a basement... Ask anyone without a sump-pump...

Well I appreciate the feedback. Yes I'm torn about not hitting the road and meeting new friends, but I've been to 11 swap meets this year alone (old parts vendor) and am road weary in a way.

In good news I've had my eye on a nice portable AC unit for my vintage 1962 Shasta tear drop camper. $300 bucks in gas saved means next week I'll be surfing the web (making new friends just the same) at the campground all in the comfort of that marvilous modern wonder we so fondly know as air conditioning.

-Um, that's not how it works. As iron oxidizes, it combines with oxygen, which has the effect of removing free oxygen from the air. Meaning that, assuming the car was in a sealed container (which it clearly wasn't) after a period of time, minor rusting would have consumed much of the free oxygen in the enclosure, and any rust would have stopped at that point.

Unfortunately in this case, the presence of water and signs the water level has varied a great deal over the years, shows the tomb wasn't airtight, and the air inside would have been exchanged by the rising and lowering water level, many times. And with each fresh run of water and air, of course more rusting is possible.

-The official story is that they were worried about possible contamination and/or hazardous fumes because of the oil and gasoline that had been stored in with the car.

I suspect, however, that at least part of the truth is that they were worried about the condition of the car, and unveiling a rusty piece of shit in front of 50,000 visitors would be kind of a letdown.

This way they have the option of toning down that part of the event.

    -You mean like this guy?
