I had the new engine in and it had not been tested or ran until we got to Tulsa. I went to a speed shop on the 11th to buy some gas and heard about Cowboy Bob's rail being stolen and I just felt like I had been kicked in the gut. That sure took all the joy out of the day. Anyway got to the race track and unloaded. 2B and Cowboy were there as well as the SDRA Tulsa guys. The first time up I was racing against 2B. I ran the rpms up to 3000 and popped the clutch. I was really boiling the hides, looked like a fuel rail out of the 60's and 2B was gone like a shot. 2B is one of the nicest guys you ever met but he is really quick at the lights and he has no mercy on you. Anyway he was in the mid 12's with 106 mph and I was in the low 14's with 112 mph. I made 4 runs all in the 111 mph to 112 mph range and all 4 runs I drew 2B. He beat me all 4 runs, so going fast is not the answer, getting there first is. I tried coming out of the hole at an idle and then getting on it but it always went up in smoke. Cowboy Bob came over and was visiting with me and asked about tire pressure and gave me some advice. On the 12th I did as Cowboy Bob said and I drew 2B for the first run naturally. We run a pro light so there is no count down just green. I cut a 203 and 2B cut a 204 the car stuck like glue and I pulled ahead by about a 1/2 car and then when I went to 3rd gear it missed and I used every bit of muscle I had to get that thing in gear and it went in. By that time 2B was a couple of car lengths ahead but I knew for once I had him because the old Jimmy really came alive and I motored right by him on the top end. There was great joy in Mudville. I went 12.35 et with 113.58 which was top speed and et for the 12th. I also took all the sencros out of the trans in doing it. I don't care finally after 4 trys I finally won a race. I got beat in the finals by the flathead powered car 00. I couldn't shift only by double clutching it could I get into high gear. Thanks to Cowboy Bob I solved my traction problem and even though it was a terrible thing about the loss of Cowboy Bob's car he still had time to help me with my problem. I feel really good and if I had the money I would buy Cowboy Bob a new car. All the guys there were great people even 2B just because he beat me 4 times I still had a great time even if the track temp was 119 degrees. for Cowboy Bob for me Roy
Folks Roy has a 11 second car when he solves his shifting problem. I made a point of watching his car from three places along the track ,from the 300ft to 1/8 the car pulls hard, even the other car was ahead you could see him close the gap. When Roy ran the 12/35 against 2B thats where he p***ed him . Roy I belive you can run 115 maybe a little more . the engine sounds strong in the lights ITwas good to vist with you and all the other guys.
Roy, GREAT!!!! Congratulations on the best ET & MPH on the 12th. It makes me wonder what it will run with more tuning, smooth shifting, etc. What RPM did you turn the engine? Now I can't wait to get mine on the dyno. You made my day! Ron
Roy there was a guy her in San diego locally Leonard Andres?? any way he had lenco machine downtown He made synchros n stuff for early chev 3 speeds that worked He is dead now but maybe some one knows something about the parts and if anything exists kinda out in left field but maybe it will help Ken
I shifted at 5000 and went through the lights at 5600. I am pulling the trans out and putting in sencros and that was another area that Cowboy Bob helped me with so we will see what at happens at the HAMB Drags. Maybe I can shift that thing like Ronnie Sox. Anyway if died right now no funeral home could get the smile off my face. Did I say it was HOT out there!!!!!!! I can't say enough about what a great bunch of guys that these guys at Tulsa are.Roy
Thanks 348 for the kind words. Thanks too for all who came to Tulsa. I'm sorry the thermostat was stuck on HOT, but thats the way it is here in July. Cowboy Bob, We're still looking for your car. We won't give up. We would like to invite all HA/GR's to join us next year. Tulsa is centrally located for all with easy access from anywhere by interstate Hwy. TRP (tulsaracewaypark.com) is one Nice facility. Great surface, lo--ng shutdown, and great track crew, Good food. the only thing that needs to be added is YOU. SO, plan on being here next year to race with us. Thanks all. The CrkInsp.
Good stuff, so what advice did he give ya, what pressure did you end up running? photo's? Cheers, Drewfus
Congrats on the new HA/GR top speed record 113.58 MPH. Wish I were there. When is the next SDRA race? I should know. Somebody please post it again.
This is definately going to be the hamb rail to contend with. This being the first time out, the car was super impressive. I couldn't run any really good numbers & we thought it was the heat & were jetting trying to find it. Finally on the last run of the week-end we did run 12.40 laying alot of rubber. It ended up being the fuel pump, not giving any pressure. Still not as good as 348's 12.35 et. Very nice person & an ***et to the cl***.
I was going to wait until I had a couple of pictures to post but I have a printer scanner and I'm out of ink and it won't scan if it is out of ink.I will go to Springfield and get some ink wednesday. I thank you 2B for the nice words and Drewfus I dropped the tire pressure to 11 lbs from 17. I am having computor problems so if you dont hear from me for a few days just know it is my 5 year old computor that is trying to die. Roy
we all got so excited over ROY running a12/35 113 we forgot to tell who won on the 12th It was hindman with a hole shot win over the okie outlaw 12/29 to a 12/25 107 NEXT RACE the 25th
For Hindman to get a holeshot on anyone is real news. The Hornets have alarm clocks installed in the ****pit for Bob.Roy
WE did away with the alarm clock and went to a remote control cattle prod ,that seemed to do the trick. FOR those interested in the Tulsa series the points are 3x RED BARON 830/1 HORNET 785/ 6 BIG ROYS GMC 630/ 00 OKIE OUTLAW 600 / 2b 285
