Tunnel Ram ( Novice questions )

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by GatorRacer, Aug 7, 2013.

  1. I suppose I should let my buddy who ran that on the street for 75000 miles and to 8 Street Rod Nationals through the 70's that it won't work. It's always a matter of how much know how you have. You can pretty much make anything work if you stay after it long enough. If your a novice with no educated friends than steer clear of it.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. It sounds like there are valid points for both pro and con as to my situation. I've decided since I've already bought the tunnel ram from the seller on Craigslist (no returns), I'll just have to give it a try and see if I like the results. If things don't workout and I don't blow myself up, then I can restore the original TBI setup. :)
I suppose this is where I'll get to earn some experience points of my own finally. I'll get some pics and post them up as I go along, probably not until April after my work schedule calms down.

    Cheers!

PS - totally unrelated - anybody here a fan of MLB The Show for Playstation? Let me know if so, I'm an animator/artist for the game.

As your talking about the T-1, brings up a quick question. As the plenum is so friggin' huge, could a person run a single four barrel on either the front or rear position and get away with it? It seems there is so much area in there that the fuel would find its way to each runner with out any trouble. The reason I'm asking is that I have this intake on a stock 350 that I haven't tried yet ,and don't want to try to find a centered top for it. (even if they make one). I guess a person could make a new top with a single four. I made one about two years ago for 6 old 94's. I sold it before I got a chance to try it. Thanx, Norm

Hey @Coop, I'm not an expert on this in any respect, but I did find through all my research here that plenty of people running tunnel rams on the street tend to run one carb full time (the back one closer to the cab of the vehicle), and with progressive linkage, the second carb will activate when enough pressure is given to the gas pedal. Not everyone does this, some just run both carbs directly all the time.
Here's a progressive setup for sale through Summit Racing.

And I did find some tunnel rams with a single carb housing, so only one carb can be mounted. I don't know anyone personally who has used this type of tunnel ram, but seems fine if that's something you're interested in. Here's one on ebay for sale.

  5. I have a friend that ran a single carb tunnel ram sbc on the street in a 55 chevy for years, and it worked very well. He still gave up some low end, but on the highway it kicked but, and cruised well also. He drove it daily!

I have a late 70's TR1. Even smaller plenum. It is very similar to the street tunnel ram

Engine has more cam but the Tranny, and Rear Gear/ Tire Size is exactly what I ran on my 2200# Model A coupe. Best 1/4 mile was 12.60 @ 108 with an Edelbrock 600 and Performer RPM intake. I was only turning 6200 in the lights with a 3.55 and 26" slick.

The carb sounds a little small for the camshaft. One question, heavy or light car? Light car should make you golden but a heavy car would be death.

Something is screwy here.....the mph should be around 5000...a little higher with a converter that's really slipping, but that's pretty far off 6200.
Where did I go wrong with my Gazintaz?

One correction, it was 57-5800. I checked the log book. Seems more reasonable since it was a little looser converter. Add that to the wind resistence of a model a. Remember, they're as aerodynamic as a brick. I remember being in high gear by the 1/8.

Either way, I'm afraid you're short of the tunnel ram power band.
