Technical turbo 350 swap in TH2004R

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by 32powerednailhead, Sep 2, 2017.

  1. This is going into a 57 chevy. Mild BB chevy. Just for street cruising no High Power. I have heard this is a relative simple swap. Anyone have any information on this swap? Or point me in the right direction to get this information. Thanks. It's not for me I am a stick shift guy. Old modified production racer.

you want to replace a TH350 with a 200-4R overdrive? the trans and driveshaft will bolt in, but you have to move the trans crossmember back several inches so the mount lines up. The TV cable is rather critical that you get it set up properly. There is a lockup clutch in the torque converter, you need to make sure it's wired properly (with the right wiring inside the trans, to work with how you power the wire going to the trans)

The 200 was designed for an engine that makes about 200 ft lbs torque, so it might need to be beefed up to live behind a big block.

bowtie overdrives might have useful info for you.

    What squirrel says.

But the beefing comment isn't as daunting as it sounds. Most of the trans. is capable of more than 1000hp if built right. Just the 4th gear isn't as able to hold "that" much power.
    Done correctly, 500hp isn't difficult.

Are a coupla places that I know of first hand that do them well.

Im fix'n to retrofit one in my Coupe...currently a race built T350, but 4.30 rear gear doesnt allow much highway use. So the 200r4 overdrive comes into play, I will use a non-lock up converter and trans. Being almost identical in size to the T350 it will be easy swap w no driveshaft mods. On a short wheel base car its an advantage, my driveshaft is only 32 inches as it is

  5. Local trans shop will not sell one out the door. So many people don't take time to set the TV cable correctly. If he does the install in house he uses the bow tie overdrive kit. His thinking is if the customer changes something later they should be able to reset the cable sos that it will not smoke the trans.

I think that i remember lots of Grand Nations running 10's and 11's with these trannys, i know they didn't have big block torque numbers but with a little work should live . This is something that i have been toying with for my 31' which currently has a turbo 350 with a 4.30 gear set .Even with 30.5' tall rear tires turning that much rpm on the highway gets old.

I run a 2004 R in my roadster and its just super. I run a 2000 stall with 3:36 gears and I don't use the lock-up anymore. Trans has worked for 8000 miles with no problems. I do have a B&M trans cooler in front of radiator, about half of the cooler is in front of the radiator. Extreme Automatics is really great to work with. I just love the gear spread.
