Not that I know of, but the mounting boss is cast into the block but not drilled so you can put the correct starter on the block by drilling the holes.

  4. As @1934coupe states, check what bolt pattern you have in the block, because that's where your starter will bolt with the Turbo 350. The bolt pattern will dictate the starter to use, and flexplate. No use using a 168 tooth flexplate, and find you only have starter bolt pattern for the smaller one, 153 tooth. If the bolt holes are parallel to flexplate, it's the smaller one, the larger flexplate uses the staggered pattern.

No, the th350 won't work with the 3 bolt starter. The block should have the holes for the 2 bolt starter for the large flexplate style starter (that uses two long bolts)

Cheaper to replace to a later style starter as Jim mentioned earlier.

That would work for blocks with screwed up starter bolt holes too. Such as the otherwise good block I had about 30 years ago that was broken off across the outer starter bolt hole from being dropped. It got stuck in a pickup with a cast iron bellhousing and granny four speed that a buddy had that needed a motor.
I'm thinking that some of the real early V8 blocks weren't drilled for starters but may be wrong. It may be that they only had two of the three holes drilled.

55 - 56 were not. 57 up had blocks drilled for starters due to the Turbo-Glide that came out that year. Not knowing what 57 283 engine's would get a Turbo-Glide GM decide to drill all the blocks.

Just use a 168 tooth flexplate and the block drilling will accept a 168 tooth starter, but not a 153 tooth starter.

Or check out a modern mini-starter [while the engine is out]

    If it's a 283 it wont be a '55-'56 engine.
