It has bee 30 years since I have installed a shift kit but I'm getting ready to install one next week in my turbo 400. Years ago I remember when I was done, my old car would freewheel while you foot was off the gas in every gear, no compression braking. I didn't really like that but never made any efforts to find out if I could have avoided that repercussion. Now I have a TransGo 1-2 kit on order. Does anyone have experience on this freewheeling issue? Can I avoid this transmission from doing that? Thanks.
I have installed a fair amount of TransGo shift kits and probably 20 are more in 400's over the years. I have not installed a shift kit in about the last 15 years as I have been out of the transmission business for a while. I have never experienced the freewheeling effect you are talking about. They have changed the name of the shift kit from The TransGo go and tow, to the 1-2 kit probably for the 4L80E application it looks like the components are much the same the three piece separator plate will supply oil to both pistons in the direct clutch and give you a much firmer (nicer) shift in to third. Automatic first and second are free wheeling on coast if it is original or has a shift kit. For every gear in a three speed automatic two components need to be applied, If you put it in drive D in first gear the forward clutch is applied and the low roller clutch is applied if you pull it down into D1 then the forward clutch is applied the low roller clutch and the low and reverse band is applied this will give you a braking action in this case the low roller clutch is in operation but ineffective, when you shift to drive second the Forward clutch is still applied and the intermediate clutch is applied there is an intermediate roller clutch that is attached to the direct clutch housing and is splined to the inside diameter of the intermediate clutches when you put your transmission in D2 then the intermediate braking band is applied to the out side of the direct clutch housing giving you braking when you get in Drive third gear the Direct drum is applied so now you have the Forward clutch applied and the Direct clutch applied at his point the intermediate roller clutch will free wheel giving you third gear. So I would say that if you have a shift kit or you do not have a shift kit your transmission will free wheel in Drive first gear and drive second gear unless you pull the shifter into D1 or D2. I've had"loose" converters that felt like you described. My 700R4 free wheels in 4th gear, unlocked, also.
