I've got a 250 inline with a turbo complete carb to pan 6a box and gauges pm me your email and I can see if I can't send some picture so you can see how it go together. It is also for sale local by word of mouth.
Clifford Performance has a cool blower system that looks freaking radical..never thought about a turbo
I swear there was a tan fat fendered Chevy in Hot Rod about 10 years ago that ended up being one of their top 10 Hot Rods of the year. It had a turbo on an inline.
I remember a light tan or burnt creme Chevy (GM product regardless) Fat Fender Coupe with a draw through turbo-ed 250. It was in their <8 series of stories. Said it didn't make lots of noise, didn't get squirrely or try to send the nose skyward, it just went, the harder you pushed (on the pedal) the better it went. Or at least that's what I remember.
Leo Santucci does a 292 in his 54 Stude and is building one to put out almost 1000hp. http://www.customdesignperformance.com/leo/leo.html He also has a book on performance builds you can find on amazon.
At one time I wuz comtemplating a turbo VW and did some google. Below is a supplier that has some good info and prices. Good for comparison shopping if nothing else. There is also a site with a guy that turboed his VW dune buggy using junkyard parts. It will give you some insight to what you can run up against. Ch***is Engineering makes some flanges. Most common junkyard turbos are not set up for ****ing through a carb so you have to get a different internal seal. Get a water cooled turbo for sure. Keep the boost under 10 psi and you will have few problems. http://lowbugget.com/Schwitzer_Turbo.html http://www.smbaker.com/rail/monsterturbovw.html
Gotta agree with www.theturboforums.com I did recently see someone upgrading a blow through 250 I6 to EFI and revamping the turbo. I did a quick search but came up short. I believe it is in the "builds" section of the forum. I too am on a turbo journey. I chose a more expesive route because of the horsepower range I want. But, with proper research and forethought you can pull off an easy 300+ HP on a stone stock six for very little money!
do it! draw thru or blow thru? I picked up a great book at the store called turbocharging, I think its an HPbook. it has compressor maps and alot of great info
The Inliners forum has a special section dealing with Turbo charging Inline engines..... http://www.inliners.org/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=13&page=1
I saw this on Youtube a while back. It is a 261 but you can get the idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WC5Trh6YCtQ
Ya the car had a 292 turbo setup. I still have that issue. i will find it and see if there is any info that might be good. Jon
Yea, that was an awesome article. I believe it was a GMC 292 truck motor though. I'm gonna go searh through my millions of old HR mags now to find it!
Could be a 292, but for some reason, through the fog, I want to say it was a 250. Regardless, it must have hauled ***.
It's a 1937 Chevy coupe with a 292 powerglide and '64 Olds rearend. Makes about 650hp with a Turbonetics setup with about 22psi of boost. He is a member of Inliners International. As I recall his name is Harry Stirneman (sp??) Saw it run down at the Goodguys show in Indy a number of years ago. It won the street car shootout 2 or 3 years in a row. Made alot of V8's eat crow...
I've got a boosted project engine in the works. It's a 235 Chevy with a built head, 8.5:1, Custom T3 turbo. No pics because it's in storage, but I'll see if I can dig up some of the plumbing pics.
Yup. It's a draw through carbed non-intercooled setup as well. As I recall, it ran 120mph in the 1/8 mile back then. I've got some underhood pictures somewhere. Everything was painted flat black, so it didn't really photograph very well. Not sure there's much to learn from them, in other words...
Did you have to strap the caps? If so did you do all 4 or?? If you strapped the caps, did you use the 'support bolt' in the middle of the cap? I ask as I expect to eventually boost the 228 GMC I have, not quite the same, but 6 Cyls W/ 4 Mains.
Makes me think hard about putting that nice T3 turbo I have sitting in the garage next to that holley 450 on the 230 six in the Nova instead of the Rambler. hmmmm.
it would probably be pretty easy to make manifolds for a turbo for a straight six... hmmmm... gives me some ideas...
