I have a 53 chevy and a 59 chevy both with stock steering columns and wiring in the column. My problem is that unless the turn signal lever is exactly in the perfect position, one or the other brake light won't light. I put a new cancelling ***embly in the 59, but still have the same problem. Obviously I don't want to get rear ended because of non working brake lights, but I really am getting sick of people telling me I have a brake light out. My dad has a 55 1st series suburban and a 55 chevy convertible that have the same problem Any suggestions?
I had the same problem with my '57, needed a new turn signal switch. I had a couple that I took off "parts cars", installed one after spraying some electric contact cleaner in it. Works fine now. KK
sounds like the switch, you could try to clean the contacts (you can take apart the switches by bending the tabs to remove the cover, beware flying springs), or replace the switches.
It's the switch as stated already. Look for good used or NOS one as a replacement. The aftermarket stuff can put back right back where you started.
Every part of those (except the '55 p***.) switches is serviceable. Even the electrical part can be torn down & repaired. The stoplight problem is usually caused by the housing being loose on the column. After cleaning & lubing all the parts under the steering wheel, align the housing dead center. I replace the Phillips head holddown screw with an Allen so it will stay tight. The '55 p*** switch is not the same as the earlier, but same problem - the housing is held tight by 3 screws & a plate fitting into slots in the mast jacket. Most '55 - '56 Chevs have been apart many times, & need some attention.
