I was wondering if any of you guy have rewired your car with a painless kit and retained you factory turn signal switch. I am trying to find a wiring diagram for the factory switch. i have got everything to work but the brake light any help would be great.
I've got a wiring diagram for the '52-53 that might help. I'll take a look at it today and either scan it or tell you what color wires go where. Remember, though, it's not for a '54... I just hope they are the same. Eric
I misspoke. I have a diagram for my '51, but didn't get one for my '52 because I planned on rewiring it completely. I see now that I'm going to need a good diagram for the '52 because I'll eventually run into the same problem as you. I also plan to use (at this point, though I may think better of it later) the factory ignition switch and light switch, so I'll need info for them as well. So I just ordered one from Cl***iccarwiring on eBay. I've purchased several from them before for several cars and they are excellent! They aren't just reprints of factory diagrams, but are newly-produced diagrams which are large, clear and brightly colored for easy identification. It's all on one one side of one big sheet (11 x 17 inches) and laminated in heavy plastic and are very durable. Best $20 you'll ever spend. Should be here in a few days. I'll check it out and get back with you. Eric
Joe,the wires that go to the stoplight switch are:red with a black tracer is the power from the switch to sending unit, green is from sending unit to brake lights.
Got the wiring diagram today, very quick service! I don't know how similar the original Ford schematic is to the aftermarket wiring kit schematic...and that may or may not pose a problem. As I see it, you'll have two ways to solve your problem: One, compare the two schematics and try to intergrate them by wire color in such a way that the switch leads are connected to the correct kit components. This ***umes the original wire pigtails are in good enough condition to use...an iffy proposition. Or Two, use an electric circuit tester on the switch itself to figure out what's what, and bring the new kit wires all the way up the column to the switch and attach (solder) them in the appropriate manner to function as the kit requires them to. Either way it's gonna be a head-scratcher unless you're really good with wiring...or the kit instructions are exceptionally good. Of course you can always take the easy way out and purchase a good aftermarket turn signal actuator kit...Speedway has 'em...and avoid the problem all together. Good luck!
eric and jeff thanks for all the help i will get it one of these days i have ordered a a/m switch for now so i can get on the road car is at the ****** shop now the one and only thing i did not rebuild on this car is now being rebuilt. just my luck thanks again for all the help
Hey, Paul! How 'bout scanning and posting the turn signal diagram for those of us electrically challenged? This is pretty much a universal problem when rewiring these cars. Thanks in advance. Eric
Don't know if this will help you are not. On the left is the '55 Ford Turn Signal Switch Wiring Color Code. On the right is the Painless Color Code to connect to. Clear as mud right. I drew up the little diagram when I rewired my '55 using a Painless kit. You didn't mention what year car you have?? 55 Ford Wiring Code Painless Wiring Code Green >>>> Stop Light Switch >>>> White Green/Orange Tracer >>>> Left Rear StopLight/Turn Signal >>>> Yellow Green/White Tracer >>>> Left Front Turn Signal Light >>>> Blue Blue >>>> Flasher >>>> Purple White/Blue Tracer>>>> Right Front Turn Signal>>>> Blue Orange/Blue Tracer>>>> Right Rear StopLight/Turn Signal >>>> Green
