I took a set of 39 rear hubs down to Schwab to have them turned. Ive had fronts done there without issue, but with the rears the mount on the machine is too large to fit through the hub. Same deal at NAPA. Does a guy need to press out the keyway to have these turned, or have I just just not gone to the right place? Machine shop was next on my list..

  2. I have a special thin arbor for my machine for those rear drums.

    Thank you, good to know.
I guess just a matter of finding the right shop

Find a shop that can do VW Bug rear drums, they also take the smaller mandrel.

There is no “press out the keyway “. That is one chunk of hub. And by the way, that’s a 40 hub and drum, not a 39.

I thought that might be the case, I’ve only removed the bearings and had no idea if the keyway was pressed in or not. Also no idea there was a difference in drums between 39 and 40. The banjo was out from under a 39 and so I made an ***umption. Thanks for the info. I’ll have to look up the differences.

Thanks a ton for the offer! I’ll hunt around here, we have some older shops in the Yakima area, maybe Whitefront.

  9. ‘39 would be a wide five patterned drum.

  10. DO NOT TRY TO TAKE THEM APART!! Find a shop with the correct tool. Ask at your local Early Ford V8 Club or Model A Ford Club for references.

The guys at Whitefront might be able to tell you who can if they can't but they aren't really into brakes on smaller rigs. I'll throw the question out on the Yakima Cars, chrome and Coffee FB group as there will be someone on there who either know or is able to do it.
