Got that book along time ago, and still flip through it from time to time.. That photo of the two 58's is probably my favorite of the book.. Both car's look so damn good!! Like you, i love 'em both.. Tony
My copies of all his books are totally dog eared, thank God Andy had forethought to record this stuff that I'm swure no one thought would be one of the most important parts of American culture...... I'll take both of 'em.
both of those cars are fantastic,,,style, colors, etc,,etc,,,just gorgeous,,,,i like the pictures in the book of the mexican upholstery shop he took the car to.... wouldnt it be cool to find those cars today?..wonder what ever happened to them,,
I think they are both pretty damn kool. 1958s don't get the respect from everybody that they deserve.
That is may all time favorite book. I would like to thank Andy for preserving hstory the way he did with that book. I have a copie to read and one in plastic that has never been pawned over. It's sometimes refered to as the "Bible". I would love to meet Andy someday.
Both cars are killer, always looking for good hot rod reading material need to get my hands on a copy!
I like the stance of the one on the right better, but they're both incredible. Those scallops are gorgeous! I love looking at pictures of cars like this (especially like that rear shot) and thinking about the different ways they could have done the scallops and learning why they did them the way they did....just by looking.
Another vote for Andy's car on the left. The build pics are awesome in the book, even cooler is the fact that he bought it new, and immediately started modifying it. That car was very instrumental in the build of my first '58 (4 or 5 58's ago). I think I nearly wore that book out, and still use it as a reference from time to time. I met Andy at the 50th Oakland show, what a cool guy.
They are both awesome...Andy's is killer the one on the right sits right...flip a coin I'll take either one
i've read that book a couple thousand times. funny thing is, i always get stuck on that page.the difference to me seems to be that andy's car has a hot rod flavor and the other one is more kustom. andy's car has the california rake, no skirts, chrome reverse. andy's green 56 ford always gets me too. i love the shot of willie wylde's merc sitting in the street next to andy's ,then new, 56.
Always loved Andy's 58. I got to speak to him on the phone once through a mutual friend. Andy couldn't have been more helpful. A true car guy through and through.
I agree hot rod rake no lakes pipes custom (not bought ) grille oops left in the picture or right from a driver point of viiew cmon boss which one ?
That book is one of my all time favorite references on cars of that period! When I started building model cars again, it, along with Andy's companion book on Hot Rods of '50s provided plenty of inspiration. It's almost surreal to see these cars in artbook-quality color reproduction after decades of seeing them in black (or dark green!) halftones on age browned magazine stock!
As a Ford guy, I never really was much of a chevy man, but I have always loved the 56's and the 58's. A 56 belaire 2 door hard top.....mmmmm or a 58 Impala,,,,even better. Wierd because most people say the two ungliest cars ever made were the 59 Fords and the 58 chevy's.............. I'll take either one in a heart beat
I have to agree with you "maybe the best custom book ever published"! I love that book and oh ya! Mine Is Signed by Andy himself! Cool Stuff.
I wuoldn't kick either of them out of the garage.Andy's books are something to latch on to,I have a few the pix are a great history lesson his strippin aint bad either.
I like the chrome steelies (are they reversed or just stock and chromed?) on the left 58...but the one on the right looks good too
