Looks good. Are you getting a skinny driver or are you guys going to have to drop a class due to your change in weight (at least for your brother .... don't tell him I said that)

Great story, Great photo, have a Great time (and do another really great Time)

  5. Jack weighs 18 pounds more than he did in high school, and his 42 year old leathers still fit fine. The day he put the jacket on and it zipped right up was the day we decided fate wants us to go back to the salt. The little Honda may spew it's guts all over the salt, but at least we can say we gave it a shot.

    Dean,

    Good luck at the flats,

About the time you were building this machine I was very interested in Honda progress in roadracing.

As I remember it, Honda made a 5 cylinder 125cc roadracer that turned 22,000 rpm. In the Honda lab engineers found that at that high RPM they could run 70 octane fuel with no loss in power.

I have been called an inexhaustible source of useless information, and that was by one of my friends. Who knows what all I have been called by others. :)

Anyway I hope you the best.

    :) :) :) Dick :) :) :)

  7. Your "useless information' wouldn't happen to include a source for a gasket set for a 1965 Honda Super 90 would it? If we are lucky enough to get a record(s) and have to pull it down for a displacement check, I'd sure like to have new gaskets to put it back together with.

DEAN, maybe you should bring her out to El Mirage for some practice first? I'll ride it for you? I saw your bike at GNRS and it was the INSPIRATION for my bike, wanna trade?

    :)Dean,

Sorry I don't know of a source for old Honda parts. :(

My friend said that my inexhaustible sourse was useless information and in this case he was right.

Earlier in this thread I think I saw someone who said that they had a friend who got the leftovers from a Honda morotcycle shop.

It might also be a good Idea to try to contact the advertising or PR Dept. at Honda Motorcycles and see if they could locate some parts in Japan.

It might be an opportunity for them to get some good publicity about your trying to break your old record with one of their motorcycles.

    It's a thought anyway. :)

  13. After setting our records in '69 we contacted Honda USA about some help with our streamliner project. Basically told us to pound sand. We'll do this one on our own.

Doing it on your own is way ahead of having to kiss some corporate butt cheek. The money (I'm guessin' here as I've never had a sponsor) would be nice. I like answering to me and no one else. I asked the large national auto parts company I work for for some sponsorship for Bonneville this year. Pounding sand seems to be the standard answer these days too. I'll do it on my own nickel.

Makes it all the sweeter!! ;)

Dean, way cool deal ya got going here. Can't wait to see you run.

As far as records go the bike guys will use oil and a graduated cylinder to measure displacment most of the time it seems to me.

    Good Luck on your project.

  17. That's what I was hoping. In the 60's The AMA rep, Earl Flanders, didn't have that equipment, and we had to pull the head so he could do a very sophisticated measurement of the bore and stroke with a machinist's scale!! We pulled the head after the frst record, then when we had it back together, Earl put a dab of red nail polish on one of the head studs to "seal" the engine. Then we didn't have to pull it apart after setting the second record. Very high tech!!!

AMA hasnt progress much in 40 years ... they still require actual cylinder measurement and use nail polish on the head bolts. You may want to enter Bub's AMA meet in late August and reestablish your record ... I think you will need leathers and a helmet this time ... great ride and cool build ... well appreciated by another 60+ year old AMA record holder ... Joe

  20. Got our entry in for the BUB meet yesterday. New leathers ordered today, and the new helmet was purchased last October. Would like to run with SCTA but the records we are after are AMA. We want a pair of 2010 AMA record certs to go with the '69 AMA certs. Looks like I better get after that gasket set.

    100 in 2010!!!!

  21. cool story, i'm trying to get there this year

Lowe Bros .... see you at the Bub's meet in August ... let 'er rip ... 2 entries 9216 / 9116 ... Joe

  23. Sent the entry for AA 100. If we are lucky enough to get that record (91mph) and don't blow it up, we'll slip the little fairing on it, and sign up for APSA 100 (104mph). We're asking a lot of the 45 year old Honda. With the new much taller gearing we'll probably have to step up the nitro load. Should be interesting!

  24. Last Saturday we took the bike to a "secret" test site, and made some test and tune runs. We wanted to dial in the new gearing, and get some baseline jetting with the new larger carb. We had about a mile and an eighth of smooth level pavement. A friend came out with his Yamaha sport bike to pace Jack and get mph readings. On the last pass he clocked 91mph in a standing start mile. The motor was about half way up the power curve in high gear when they ran out of room and had to shut off. Shooting for class records of 91.5 and 104.8 we feel good about our chances with 3 miles to run on the salt. Now, we just have to keep the 45 year old crakshaft in the crankcase!

This is what 90mph with 100cc's looks like........................

Know for a fact that Earl had the oil and graduated cylinder by '71, he used it on my rig which was way under the upper limit anyway. Another team's rig was just a touch over using the oil, IIRC they wound up tearing down to use the mics, still just barely over after Earl took measurments several times, Earl tried his best for the team but a fraction over was over so they missed the autographed wallpaper. A true honest gentleman in my opinion.

All the best for you and the crew Dean, will be following your journey on the 'net with much interest. You are living out one of my "someday dreams" - taking the old rig back just to prove "older I is faster I was" is nothing more than kid's trash talk.

Dean, The best of luck at BUB. We just got back from SpeedWeek. The salt is great. I pounded the 500 sidecar gas and fuel records on my own nickel. Let er rip!!

  29. Thanks for the kind words and well wishes. We feel like we have a pretty fair shot at a record or two. I will post results form Wendover if my antique lap top can get a connection there.
