the movie gets better if you absorb it slowly over fifty or so viewings. i used to work at a video store and played this all the time.
    and it's an a coupe with a big block, not a '32.
i also heard somewhere that there were a few 55's. one or two of them were hot LS7's. (crate engines...in the 70's?) but there was one car that they had to detune because the two holleys and all that cam were too cranky for the road trip. anybody know any more about this?

Pretty sure they were all L-88 427s and they kept them cranky with solid lifters and all that jazz. No detuned crap. Could also clearly hear the straight cut gears in the trans. Brings goosebumps every time.

and the end...two theories. burning film symbolizes crash and burn, or at the very least defeat to crazy sounding small block el camino (listen at the starting line...you hear big block '55, then high revving small block. anybody second that?)
other theory: burning film is a metaphor (in that slightly off-kilter 60's sense) for the cycle of drive/race/drive/race that the driver and mechanic continue on after the loss of their hippie girl.

the LS7 is probably the first crate only engine, they sold them starting in the early 70s thru the early 90s over the counter, never put them in a car.

seems to me more likely they'd have the 427. A friend showed me his reciept from the late 60s when he bought his L88 short block and heads from the chevy dealer.

Haven't seen it since it came out. Everybody knew the film was shitty and only went to see the car. I had a 55 with a BBC and 400th when the movie came out and that was the only reason I went. Two lane was kind like a early 70's porno movie. All visual and no plot. Easy Rider was the same way. I'd like to see it again, 35 years later, to see how my perspective has changed. If anyone knows where to get a dvd cheap, please let me know. I wouldn't pay $120 for any movie let alone TLBT. Thanks;)

    Just another opinion...

The whine of the straight cut gears in the Muncie at the beginning of the movie definitely sucks you in...first time I saw that I knew I had a great movie for background noise in the shop, if nothing else!

And Vanishing Point (the original...never bothered with any other) is another great...has alot of interesting parallels to TLBT. Also a favorite to have on in the shop!

So, how many times in Vanishing Point does Kowalski pass the damned black car going the other way?

I still remember sitting in the theatre seeing the sound go away, the film slow down and then the film burn. Not an uncommon experience in those days. Everyone sat there pissed and waiting for the projector guy to fix it until the lights came on and we realized we'd been had... A few even yelled "Hey! Wake up up there and fix this shit!"

That was the joke. The younger generation wasn't there to see films break in theatres all the time.

I don't know about the "2 lane" car, but the original American Graffitti car is owned by blues-man Jeff Beck. I don't think they were the same car, he bought the AG car just the way it was, down to the Cal plates on the car, or at least thats the rumor......

Jeff Beck's Graffitti coupe is a clone he had built back in the '70s.

The Thing That Bugs Me About Tlbt Is The Road Race Between A Road Car And A Gasser. Tell Me How Does This Work? And I Agree With Someone Up The Thread There Were Way Too Many Scum Bags In The Movie. Hey This Will Make Everyone Really Mad But Really One Of The Best Car Enthusiast Movies Is The Fast And The Furious. The Type Of Cars Really Sucks (except The Charger) But When You Consider Street Racing Is The Main Focus Of The Movie Its Not Too Bad. But I Guess I Would Have To Say The Original Gone In 60 Seconds Is The Coolest. However As A Movie It Sucked. But From A Car Guys Standpoint It Is Awesome. You Can Pick It Up With Two More Movies From The Same Maker For About $20. Well Worth The Money

Becks Coupe is a copy of the original. When the movie studio sold the coupe it first went to Steve Fitch (Kansas) then it was bought by Rick Figari (California) He still has it to this day!

Figari does own the original 1932 Coupe from Graffiti but as far as I know the 55 is a copy built by Richard Ruth who did build the 55's for two lane but its not an original movie car

What Jeff beck has is a clone he built years latter. But he does own the original AG yellow coupe's licence plate. Its on his 32 now. He talked about it with that goof on Car Crazy.

I think we have established that the Beck car is a clone.

TLBT is a little hokey, but I can watch it over and over.

I have had TLBT for a long time. Gone in 60 Seconds also. Everytime I play one my wife rolls her eyes and says "Are you going to watch that again"?

You then know it's a good movie. "That's just stupid, that's a stupid ending". LOL

  24. I heard that Figari owned one of the AG 55's that came from two lane for a while. He sold it and its the one that got all redone and is almost nothing like it was originally.
