Sorry to hear about that. People are going to see more of this because a)it's the thrill of the moment type of race. b)If you back out or decline your at the mercy of your peers. c)With the problems that the strip in Mokane(?) are facing, kids are running out of places to go. Drag strips are going to be a thing of the past if these people that complain about noise problems continue to have their way.......it's a sad situation. later plmczy
That sucks. I'm really sorry to hear that, but honestly (sorry, here comes my smart ass street racer side ), if the kid's a bad enough driver to hit a tree, do you think it would've been any better on the strip? I am really sorry to hear that though. Young people dying sucks. BAD.
Sad to hear about the death of anyone, specially when its as stupid as that. When will these people learn?
Man you're right! It's all good to race, but do it in a way you won't be killed. If you don't care about yourself that's kool, but believe it or not, others do car about you. It always happens to the other guy....at some point, you get to be the other guy.
Back in the mid 80's when I was in high school I used to go watch that stuff all the time...then the busts started to happen and then two guys got wiped out in a Nova (I was in the area but did not see it happen). The street race culture guys were robbing parts off the car before the cops got to it...scary stuff. A few months later as soon as I graduated one of the guys at my school that was into the bike thing and doing it on the street got a new pearl white Honda (Interceptor?) and was messing around and ran a red light and went almost all the the through a full size van when he hit it sqaure on the side...kinda killed the street stuff for me...but I have been there and done that myself...hell, I goofed with a ricer a few months ago and avoided a ticket....it just takes one bad decision and a second... Glad your kid was not in the car man...hope he gets through it okay. Everything has a down side, even the car hobby...hope this makes him stick with the positive side of it...a hard lesson to learn.... I will be thinking of the kids parents I lost a good kid from my class a few years ago that was driving like a fool in his dads 97 Impala SS, hit me real hard. Hang tuff.
its a shame........ but it will never stop....... As long as there are cars there will be street racing.. unfortunately some lose more then just the race.......
It is always SAD when someone dies........ My heart goes out to their family. Most all of us have done STUPID or DUMB things in our youth. Most of us did not have to pay with our life. I do not have children (but my wife is a high school teacher) so I am NOT one to preach but I see so much stupid parenting...it is shocking. So many parents BUY their kids fast Ninja motorcyles or Turbo something cars and turn them loose. The parents want their kids to be popular or in the crowd they loose sight of the dangerous world out there. Most parents have NO idea where their kid is and what the kid is doing. My Dad could have bought me a new 409 Chevrolet but he had me work and buy a car and keep it running. I had a 55 Chevrolet 2 door 150. I resented the fact that ALL my friends were in new cars.... But ole Dad was right. And my parents knew where I was and what I was doing until I went off the college Sorry about the deaths but maybe this will SAVE your kids....
Did my share of street racing in my youth, and lived through it. I've walked away from (non racing related) wrecks and got wise to the fact that NOBODY is invulnerable. Laugh at my underpowered, geeky "hot rods" of late, but I got nothing left to prove between stoplights anymore. I'd rather cruise and have fun with friends than bet my life, or someone else's on a stupid street race. At the track, we'll have some fun in a semi-controlled environment, but on the street...the odd little burnout is about all the bravado I'm willing to show anymore! Luckily, I discovered Bracket Racing and took to that to get the speed and thrills out of my system. Boring as Hell to watch, you don't really know how cool it is until you've done it a while. It's a chess game, a battle of wits and skills, as well as a test of the car's ability to perform consistently. It can be alot of fun...and a LOT safer than risking EVERYTHING on the street! Geeez, I sound like a DAD or something, eh?
That is horrible news. Everyone here knows the attraction to racing - street or track. Ricer street racing is big up here in Vancouver, and one of the biggest issues that I never see brought up is this; it seems in that last 10 years or so, street racing changed from the traditional straight line, start line/finish line race, into a road race complete with traffic, pedestrians, sharp corners and...NO FINISH LINE! It's like, "let race from one side of the city to the other. Whoever doesn't die wins! WHAT THE HELL!! To boot, those cars are alot safer than a gutted 55 chev gasser or whatever, it just seems that one stoplight to the next is alot less hazardous to your health than a 10 mile road race tryin to carve corners at 150 MPH.
Oh really cheaterslick??? THAT is STUPID!!! I agree, anyone doing anything like that on public roads deserves whatever they get! I definitely agree that stoplight to stoplight (or on a deserted industrial drive like here in Flint) is a whole different ball game. Like I said, if you can't go straight for 1/4 mile on clean, dry, PAVED roads (at ANY speed) without hitting a tree, you shouldn't be driving in the first place!
These stories tear me up.I lost friends BITD doing stupid stuff, and I have an 18 year old going off to college in the fall.Honda may be this generations "32 Ford",but when we went to pick out a car for my son,we bought a nice little 626.I'm sure he does stupid shit with his car when he's not around me,but the only modification to his car is a set of Moon discs. He figured I would spring for Moons, but knew not to ask me for any rubber band billet shit. His friends make fun of his caps, but he's sticking with them Until you've had kids of your own,you CANNOT imagine what the loss of a child means. And for those of us lucky enough to have our kids safe and sound,we can't really imagine the horror of that loss, either.
bustingear, Glad your boy was safe and I do feel for the family members but.. I have no simpathy for the kids themselves. You do something dumb that threatens the lives of others, you deserve to get whats coming to you. It may seem hash but, after cleaning up accident scenes where people were killed because of anothers actions back when I was an EMT, I lost all respect with those that are have no regard for others lives or safety. still the familys didn't deserve the pain of these losses they will go through. For that they are in my prayers
[ QUOTE ] It is sad it takes something like this to happen for people to learn not to do it. [/ QUOTE ] What's really sad is that too many people don't learn when something like this happens to someone else. I don't want to be judged based on any of the stupid things I did when I was a kid. Unfortunately for these two kids and their families and friends, these two have paid the price for a few moments of being stupid. Neither of them will do it or anything else again, though I'm not prepared to call that learning.
that happpens alot down here in san diego, especially with the ricers. the police finally got tired of it and have special units that go after the ricers. they educate the unit to be able identify aftermarket engine parts. they have also increased the penalty for racing. they confiscate your car and you cant get it back, but you still have to pay the value of the car. its something along those lines.
Every decade has its street racers, and its street race movies, be it Fast and Furious, Two Lane Blacktop, American Graffiti, or whatever, so street racing will always be promoted, condoned, and glorified. Nobody can argue that that Fast and Furious glamorises and promotes illegal street racing, can they??? Only a parent can feel what its like to lose a child, and not until they have children of their own will the youngsters of today know what it is like to worry yourself sick about where your offspring are each night, what they are doing, and will they come home safely. When I was a tearaway teen racing round on fast jap motorcycles, living at home, my mom once told me that she never slept at night until she heard me come thru the door. I never believed her, until I was a father Sorry mum, sorry dad, if only I'd known
Sorry to hear about the loss of a few young drivers...I see many many accidents, and most involve teenage drivers...Parents should be more responsible when choosing their childs first vehicle... JP
Very sorry to hear about this. My prayers go tou to the families. You know, its seems that there are more ricer wrecks than say good ol' American Iron.......Something I've noticed from trying to drive my wifes front wheel drive Stratus like a badass, is that a front wheel drive car doesn't handle worth a fuck when it gets out of control, you just can't feather the gas and correct it. Once again, that really sucks to hear about.
Whats up with the *delete* delete*? I saw an article in the paper this morning about a kid in Collin Country that died in a car accident but it made no mention of a race or high speed or anything...was this the same kid?
[ QUOTE ] Something I've noticed from trying to drive my wifes front wheel drive Stratus like a badass, is that a front wheel drive car doesn't handle worth a fuck when it gets out of control, you just can't feather the gas and correct it. [/ QUOTE ] I agree... I was given a '91 CRX, and it seems to have a mind of it's own. The pull on the front wheels makes it hard to steer. If you're on the gas, you're fighting the steering. When you let off, it seems to over-correct. Great on gas, quick as a bunny, but a fucked up pile of shit to drive. If I had a kid, I wouldn't let him drive one. JOE
[ QUOTE ] Drag strips are going to be a thing of the past if these people that complain about noise problems continue to have their way.......it's a sad situation. later plmczy [/ QUOTE ] I used to work for an acoustics lab. And we had to deal with a few of these cases. One in particular was a race track that had been present since 50's. A developement went up near by and the strip actually had the consideration to put up earthworks to block the noise. On their valition, nobody asked them to. Still after a year the neighbors complained about the noise. Funny thing is there was less noise than your average un-barriered highway. And it really only occurred two evenings a week, and two days. Evenings being keyword, not late night. And still the neighbors pushed the issue, and finacially strained the track owner to the point he might have had to close. Never heard what happened, as I quit before the outcome, and couldn't follow the story. We represneted the track owner, nice guy getting screwed.
