I am having some very conflicting notions about the party/show slated for Dec 6 in Houston.
    Here are the facts:
The Continental Club has offered the day for the show.
If this show would take place in a club, the CC would be the most logical choice.
The other option would be to have a smaller, more artist-heavy gathering at Han's Rod and Cycle....no drunks, no scenesters, no f....ng coop stickers and vdo shirts....

    Paint-slinging, parts trading,eats,boombox....good friends...that would be ideal.

The reality: People have expenses...it costs to travel...artists need to make some sales,to justify the trip to Houston....
Unless everyone wants to make the trip anyway....Those who want art by their friends will show up,regardless...
    Maybe a HAMB-centered party?
I have seriously been thinking about letting the Rat Fink show label go .....Is it a tribute? Or just my refusal to let go of the past.....Alot of people continue to make money by paying "tribute" to the Man....I don't plan to be in that group.
Maybe you guys will help give this gathering a new name?
A gathering of Texans who build, race, paint, and illustrate hot rods and kustoms....
A new name.....no Rat Fink this or that....
Ed wanted his parties AWAY from So-Cal for a reason....we were going to have them at the Salt Flats to KEEP AWAY all the g-Damned fat devil girl garbage and leeches....He said ,"If people show up,great...if not,we will just paint and eat anyway!"
Well, my heart is telling me that Ed's party is being handled best by Ilene Roth....it is where it should be...in Utah, with her wishes kept pure.
I realize that even if I don't display the RF and Roth name everywhere,it won't stop anyone else from doing it...But at least I know I'm not a part of it.
It's become a little too easy for "tributes" to become a free ticket to "connect" with someones' name and legacy.

    To sum up....
    Club or garage?
    New name for our party?
By "our" party,I mean all of US...
Thanks for hearing me out....looking forward to your input.

You asked for opinions, so here goes. I didn't know Ed Roth, so mine is not as valid as others may be.

Does Rat Fink die because Ed Roth passed? I hope not. I thought the idea of this party was a Rat Fink Reunion for those of us that can't get to Ca. Just because the name may draw more people, I don't see that as necessarily a bad thing.

Who do you think buys all this art? I bet a ton of it is purchased by "scenesters" or "wannabes" that want to be a part of it somehow. I'm certainly not on the inside of the art circles. Couldn't draw a good square if you spotted me three sides. But I dig what some of ya'll do. And my wife just hung four Weesner prints in one of "her" rooms. And last time I checked, Coop was an artist making $$$ by selling stickers of his art. Not my thing, but it is his art.

As far as having it at the club, I'd vote for yes. Not a big issue for me, but I've never been to the Houston club, and I'd like to see it.

The Mrs. and I are planning on coming up whatever it is called and wherever it is. Just let us know. But changing plans last minute is going to cause confusion and less people showing up.

It's your show, and you were the one that knew Mr. Roth, so you need to feel good about using the name or not. I don't think you are exploiting anything by getting people together to enjoy hot rods, music, and art. Seems like that's what he dug too.

Buzzard....Hell Yes your opinion is valid!
And you raise some very practical and logical issues as to the show....
Before I go any further,I'll attempt to detail some of my statements....
I slammed coop for a very basic reason- I despise him.
He did not respect Ed or his wishes. He never worked for Ed, yet he used Rat Fink and the Beatnik Bandit in his art,as well as Newt's Roth Studios style , without ever paying respect to Ed, nor seeking permission.
I promised Ed I would never support, publicly or privately, coops' work or efforts,no matter how much the public adored him. In early '97 I had a phone conversation with coop regarding sculpting some of his characters, and the subject turned to Ed Roth...I told him Ed did not appreciate the fact that the media kept grouping him together with people who never worked for him, and coops' depiction of a crucified Rat Fink on one of his posters,etc...
coops' response to me was "F..k Ed Roth, I don't have to ask him anything! I can use what I want when I want, and I'm not gonna ask Roth everytime I want to use his stuff...I'm Coop!"
So much for the sculpting, or any other involvement with the sawed-off little prick....Would working with him have helped my career? Probably so, but that's not the type of friend I am...
Ed asked me to make his enemies mine, and I have.
Hope that explains my sentiments regarding my comments about fat devil girls.

Of course, my wife and I can never separate our lives from the name Roth....but something tells me to keep it inside, display it in our work, honor his name through swet and blood.....
Hope to see ya there Buzzard...thanks for the support...

I hear ya' on people riding on the Rat Fink's coat tails.People who call themselves Artists, can't come up with anything original by themselves,so they continue to make poor copies of someone elses work and somehow this makes them Holier than Thou. BULLSHIT ! I've lost track of the number of Clowns who have told me: "Ed said I could,I'm in his Will." His Will must have been the size of the LA phone book.

Thanks Unkl Ian.....good to see you guys can relate....
I, just like Eric Burden, don't want to be misunderstood....
SK8.....that suggestion sounds like a Wiccan hootenanny or something....Let's call it" Pat Maphis Annual I-Pay-For Everything Shindig and Barn-Raising"......

  9. You know my view on this subject. For the record...I vote for the smaller, more intimate "friends and family" vibe. Most scenesters are broke, cheap beer swilling, price shoppers. Most of the stuff I sell at conventions and gatherings is sold to other artist types. I would rather get together with some other like minded, car culture oriented artists and friends and hang out and paint and swap tricks and "secrets". Maybe do a collaborative (sp?) project for auction to benefit a charity and some smller stuff to auction here, to benefit the HAMB. I'll be there regardless, but my vote is for a garage type gathering of fink freaks.

Glad to see this come up. I'll side-step the Ed Roth discussion escept to say that I'm in sync with Ace's take on things. However, the 12/6 shindig is a stickier wicket. BUZZARD has heard me rant before - it pains me that we can't seem to develop the same vibe around the Houston CC as exists around the original in Austin. It's just not the same. I've seen the same bands at both clubs several times, and the Houston shows are generally weak if you've seen the Austin show - just don't get it. So... a part of me definitely wants to blow the doors off the place Saturday so more folks will get what it's all about.

On the other hand, it would definitely be nice to do the 'smaller focus' blowout at Hans'. Maybe do the thing at Hans' then hit the club for music and beers that night...?

Not a lot of help, I know. I do agree that we need to nail it down so folks aren't confused - and let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

I'm with 62buford and Buzzard.I like the CC parties and we need the same vibe down here in Hou as theyn have in Austin. The only thing bad about the CC is parking, but I'll go to the party wherever it goes down.

Yeah I know... no help at all. I'm a good dancer, tho! [IMG]

The decision we need to make is whether we're shooting for A.) a 'massive turnout general public type show' which may be attended mostly by idiots, or B.) an intimate gathering of only the baddest and brightest.

To my earlier point - if we decide to do the 'general public' thang, we can get KPFT to mention it during their weekend music calendar updates and shoot for massive turnout. If that's not the goal... never mind.

I think we are paying our respects by using his name in honor of a group of friends getting together to paint and by keeping this alive and well.

    Johnny,
I don't think that the NAME you LABEL your show with will INFECT it's INTEGRITY, when it all comes down to the wire..

You HAVE a "SOUL", your POWERFUL. You have ROOTS and you STRIVE to keep a certain SACREDNESS UNTAINTED while HOLDING it close and PURE...
    It is your LIFE.....

You would HAVE to leave it to some of them FLUNKY so-cal SCENESTER ART FAGGOTS, to TURN a once cherished SALUTE to a NEAT ARTIST into a fucking RINGLING BROTHERS BARNUM circus............

SOCIAL DISTORTION MATCHING fleece JOGGING SUITS will be on SALE next year at the RAT "DONALD TRUMP" FINK show........

and all the HIP PINSTRIPERS in the BUSTER POINDEXTER FLARED pants,, will slop a BUNCH of CROOKED shit on some CARS.......

    RATFINK?
maybe someday ROTHALAPOLOOZA can JOIN hands for a WORLD tour with BILLETPROOF...

Maybe STARBUCKS can SPRING for a SPONSORSHIP, to drum up a T.V commercial featuring a REAL live RAT ROD.....

I think you will be OK JOHNNY cause you got FUCKING BALLS. and you tell it like it is,,,

    Your HEART PUMPS PURE,
while them other FAGGOTS hearts PUMP PISS"....

    XOXOXO

    germ

RATFINK is really about lining your pockets with someone elses fame,,,

And there you have the problem.....crowds that can be viewed as potential customers.....or crowds that can be clueless as to why they are there in the first place....
I'm not against gathering in "spirit" with Ed's original parties in mind, I just want to make this something that doesn't use the name Roth or Rat fink to promote itself....
It should reflect all the people from this board who plan to attend....It should distance itself from any hype-oriented scene.....
Houston DOES need energy and focus....but it is caught up,and has been for years, in a clusterf-ck of Joto Heat, vintage clothing pimps,etc.....
Maybe Steve w. can ultimately change that....
Even the new name shouldn't get us hung up...it's just something that will go on the posters to identify the party...
So let's have those suggestions....this is about the GROUP, not me....

The big question - when does El Jefe need to know your/our intentions? Are we jerking him around here, or do we have some time to finalize our intent for the club?

I'm for a day/evening at Hans' with the pure of heart, then a night run to the club to see music. Just once I'd like to see more than 10 cool cars parked alongside that place - not sure when we'll get another chance like this.

Well Buford....the CC has the 6th marked on their calendar for a noon to 2am lineup that combines a swap-n-bop with totally separate vendors and what would be our car/art show later that day......that's all I know....I haven't spoken to Steve.....the bands, schedule, etc etc seems to have been decided by the Houston club as far as I can tell...
One of my concerns is having swap vendors competing with the hot rod artists for space and customers...Like I said before, my loyalty is with the HAMB artists who are coming from out of town.....You can see why I need input at this point...

Not to pull to one side or the other but El Jefe has already given you the club for the day. I wouldn't back out on him, I also don't know all the details. I do know that he is trying with the scene down in Houston with the bands and the swap and bops. Might as well help him with the cause.

I'll go where ever it is.

And I do appreciate Steve's generosity....without the CC, we would still be going to that crooked shithole, the Satellite....
If none of you out-of-towners care one way or the other about the mix of vendors, etc etc, then I don't either....
We aren't going with the intent to make money...we just want to hang out with our friends and get some creativity going...
But I am serious about that name change....let's nail it down....and move forward....
Where the heck is FatLucky? And those no-count Chupacabras?
Germ is our guest of honor....and with his schedule,I'm happy to say we are DAMN lucky to have him this time of year...

  28. For the record this is just my opinion. I have lived in Houston on and off most of my life. I remember a time (60's-70's) when hot roddin was in its heyday here in H-town. There was always something going on somewhere. What happen to that I'm not really sure. Johnny I think you can really make a difference here. You have the talent and the ability to make this at least a yearly event. I think it would be fitting to have it at the CC. Steve I think is more than willing to work with you to make this happen. You two guys can bring back some of what Houston has lost and I think it is a win win situation for everyone. The name I don't think really matters, just come up with something and lets do it every chance we get! A Texas Hot Rod Uprising! Ok I'll shut up now.
