On the last one of these oil threads, someone posted an article where someone actually test 200 motor oils against a bearing destruct test. In that article, he stated that all the oils with the reported high zinc content didn't offer much more protection in his testing then most other supposedly low content zinc oil did. None of the high zinc content oils were in the top 50 brands tested. Also stated in his test was that all the oils with even the lowest protection rating exceeded the threshold mandated by all automobile manufacturers. Also note worthy was that though all the top 25 performers were synthetic, several dino oils were in the 2nd set of 25 top rated performers. So it seems, maintaining the proper oil level, and changing it at the proper time and/or mileage is of more importance then which oil is actually used. Good filtration also helps reduce the amount of contaminants the oil carried between changes. I guess with all these improvements, some things haven't changed. Proper oil level and proper oil changes with good filtration have been required since I was a teenager working at the gas station. Gene
